An Old Hank Williams Song

My life’s just like An Old Hank Williams Song
I live things Hank wrote when he came along
I do things Jimmy Rogers wrote of too
And it makes me wonder what these fellows knew

I wonder if they played in my home town?
I wonder did they take a look around?
At the places that I’ve been—
Did they talk with all my kin—
Then write it in a country music song?

Did they know that I’d write songs the same as they?
Buy a guitar and begin to learn to play?
When my sweetheart said goodbye
They both wrote how I would cry
I wonder how they knew she wouldn’t stay?

How did they know the jealousy would grow?
Until I shot a man and fled to El Paso?
That the bloodstains on my hand
Would make me a different man
Because they sang my story many years ago

And along with all the other things they knew
Did they know that I’d be living without you?
Some fences have no mending
And this broken heart I’m tending
Makes be feel like Luke the Drifter number two.

Did they know their songs made me a better man?
Strive to be a better person than I am?
Are they up in Country Heaven?
Where someday I hope I’m living
Cause I hope to meet them there to shake their hand
