A Boy Without a Gun

I'm not very political. I don't know about you.
I seldom think about it 'cause I have so much to do.
I won't spend every moment to conform to this or that.
I just do what I need to do, keeping my life intact.

I know men give their lives each day; they say to keep us free.
But if I live only for them, then that’s not liberty.
I couldn’t spend all of my time at church or at the polls.
I don't wish to control others; I don’t like saving souls.

I won't base life on politics or vain philosophies,
I'm much too busy living it and doing as I please.
You can call my words sarcasm, or any other art.
But don't think I don't mean each word, they're written in my heart.

Life built around politics or religion to me seems
To be a life that's built on fear of what the future brings.
But I live by the things I love and people I hold dear.
I try to learn the way things work; I have no time for fear.

Someday this world may go insane and blow itself apart.
Or men might travel to the stars and make another start.
And if someday the world goes mad and evil soldiers come.
How would I ever stop them—Just A Boy Without A Gun?

But I might build a rocket ship; pretend it's just for play,
And blast out to the galaxy and still live my own way.
I'd take all sorts of people and animals two by two.
We'd build a world where people do the things they love to do.

There wouldn't be no taxes; what we each had we would share.
And we wouldn't need no money—just water, food and air.
We would all be pretty happy, but even if we died,
We'd know we died just living out the things we feel inside.

Good folks don't need no super god to make them do what's right.
And kids don't need no boogie man to scare them in the night.
Good folks can know for certain that the devil isn't real.
He only comes to evil folks who kill and rob and steal.

And good folks live in heaven nearly each and every day.
They carry it inside them, just like games the children play.
The earth does not belong to men. Men belong to the earth.
She nurtures us and feeds us like all mothers who give birth.

Religion, politics and greed—the cause of every war.
Folks give their sons to die and then still struggle as before.
We fought one war to end all wars, but wars go on and on.
There’s war on poverty and drugs— all wars we've never won.

Preachers and politicians tax the spoils and give back naught.
I thank you sir, but I'll just keep what I've already got.
The earth does not belong to men. Men belong to the earth.
She nurtures us and feeds us like all mothers who give birth.

So should the world someday go mad and blow itself apart.
Some men might travel to the stars to make another start.
