Nowland Springs, "aka" Nowlan Springs, "aka" Nolen Springs, "aka" Newlon Springs Cemetery is located on the Southwest Corner, at the intersection of Newlon Road and Newlon Lane in a wooded area in Fort Smith, Arkansas. (Sebastian County)
The Cemetery was started when Jack Mussett's young son Fred died and was buried behind the family home as often done. Mrs. Mussett spent so much time grieving over the grave of her son that Mr. Mussett becames conerned for her health and purchased the two acres on Newlon Road as a public burial ground and moved his son's body there.
The land was later deeded to the Nowland Springs School District. The school once stood beside the Red Barn steak house. The school burned and was moved to the corner of Mussett Road and Newlon Road. The school again burned, then it was rebuilt and the name changed to Trusty Elementary.
SHORT STORY ON THE NOWLAND COMMUNITY
Edward William Benj. Nowland was born in 1806 in Hartford Co., MD. The son of Peregrine Nowland & Rebecca Savin. The Nowland's immigrated to Tennessee by 1820 where Edward married Harriet Craig Berryhill in Nashville on July 8, 1830.
In 1832 E.W.B. (as he was known) was appointed sutler at Cantonment Gibson. He benefitted from important family connections in Arkansas, Tennessee and Washington D.C.
The exact date that Mr & Mrs E.W.B. Nowland is not determined for sure, but by 1835 E.W.B. was paying taxes on 27 lots in the city of Fort Smith, valued at $5,175.
By 1839 the Nowland's owned 17 town lots in Fort Smith. In 1842 Harriet paid taxes on 2 lots, three houses, five oxen & two cattle. In 1843 Harriet was taxed on 160 acres in Section 34. This plantation wwas 1st known as Oakwood & after 1850 was known for that and as NNowland Springs.
The cemetery is not in good shape.
As of March 2006 the Rail road has torn down the fence on one side and have push all the trash, debris, rock and old RR Ties into part of the cemetery. I have uncovered one stone in this pile and see they have tossed a stone to the side.
I have obtained more names that are or were buried in the cemetery at one time. Many bodies were moved due to devlopment.
ANYONE THAT HAS PICTURES OF THE PAST, OR WHO CAN SHARE WITH ME DETAILS ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN BURIED HERE, THEN I WOULD LOVE TO HERE FROM YOU.

This cemetery is practically destroyed by vandalism in the past.

There are many stones in tact but many in pieces & missing also. I have matched up some stones that were scattered throughout & some are in to many pieces.
I have photos & am hoping to get them placed on here soon. If you need a copy in the meantime, feel free to email me and let me know who you are wanting.

I am also searching for some one that may have a diagram map that may of listed the names in the order where the actual burial plots in hopes of some day reconstructing the cemetery and to put stones in place of the ones that are missing, crushed or ect.
