NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN AIDS FOUNDATION

The National American Indian AIDS Foundation was founded by Calvin E. Twoguns, a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians living with HIV/AIDS since April 1992.

The National American Indian AIDS Foundation is the only foundation in the United States of America focused specifically and dedicated to American Indians/Native Americans living with HIV/AIDS who have exhausted all Federal/State/Local Resources currently available.

The National American Indian AIDS Foundation mission is to raises monies necessary for special emergency grants for those Native American Indians who live on reservations in rural or urban areas of the United States and Canada that have barriers that impede the health and welfare services/as well as HIV/AIDS resources.

Since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980's, American Indians/Native Americans living with HIV/AIDS, went from 275 cases in 1993 to over 4,150 in 2003. Out of this total 2,875 are living with AIDS. ( over a thousand percent...!!!). Of the 4, 150 affected by HIV/AIDS, over 1200 have already died from AIDS. Estimates to date have indicated that there may be as many as 15,000 or more living with the HIV virus, but are not being tested due to cultural barriers within their own tribes.

The US Surgeon General has already stated that this disease is "a walking time bomb" for the Native American Indian Community. Statistics are also suggesting that the HIV/AIDS infection rate is close to 14.7 % per 100,000 in the American Indian Communities throughout the United States. Canadian Statistics currently are 14% through the aboriginal population.
