Temple Rubbing

Ancient Thai temple walls are often covered in stone relief craving of scenes from the Thai epic myth Ramayana. Pilgrams would rub charcoal or other material over paper on these walls to made a momento of their journey.

These Temple Rubbings were later made for souvenirs and sold to foreign tourists. They became very popular allowing local Thai merchants to make money. However, many temple walls were eventually damaged from being rubbed too much.

It is no longer allowed to make rubbings from most ancient thai temples, in an effort to preserve historic sites.

My Thai Temple Rubbings are reproductions of antique pieces done on Saa Paper. The stone reliefs used to make these wonderful posters are new and not part of any temple.
