Mudmee wrap skirts have persisted to indicate a woman's belonging to a particular group in rural Thai society. The refinement and opulence of the weave defines the wearer's socioeconomic status in the village.
Mudmee is a subset of resist dying technique. The name Mudmee means "Not being colored" when translated in English. The Mudmee dying process employs dye-resistant materials to block the penetration of dyes into selected areas of the pre-woven threads of silk. The process is repeated with every color of the pattern, working from light to darker dyes.
