WELCOME TO THE AMERICAN-KENYAN EDUCATIONAL CORPORATION WEBSITE

American-Kenyan Educational Corp

American-Kenyan Educational Corporation "AKEC" is a 1998 non-profit corporation founded by Ms. Becky Kunz for the purpose of establishing a small fund to assist education in Kenya. It was while visiting Kenya that Ms. Kunz became keenly aware of the many financial, text book and supply related problems that Kenyan schools and children experience every year. She decided to render her assistance in whatever small way she could and that is how and why she founded AKEC corporation.

Objectives:
AKEC has two general objectives. One, it seeks to promote and support education in Kenya at the primary and secondary levels. Second, it seeks to encourage & strengthen leadership and empowerment among parents and teachers at the local and district levels by providing them with financial and material support.

To accomplish these two general goals, AKEC agency's mission is to raise funds, solicit and collect materials, school equipment and supplies with which to assist primary and secondary students and schools throughout Kenya.

Yes, we do need your support in any of the following forms:

1)Monetary Donations - which will be used toward a current project or perhaps a project that you would like to see happen in a Kenyan School. In the past we have purchased textbooks for numerous schools and have even constructed a building containing three classrooms;

2) Student supplies e.g. notebooks, pencils, paper. These items are so simple for most us in the U.S., but it is a hardship for students to acquire these basic materials. Many do not have pencils to write with - but they continue to learn - writing with sticks in the dirt. Or should they have a pencil - they break the pencil into parts to share with their siblings.

3) New and/or retired PC's 486s & above which should be y2k compliant. All computers donated will be received by needy schools which do have access to electricity.

4)Copiers, fax machines, even the old-fashion ditto machines. At the present time so many schools have no books, or they share books. Teachers write lessons on the chalkboard while the students copy to paper. If the schools had any of these gifts, the teachers could write and copy their lessons and/or tests for the students. Easier for the teachers but for the students - the only pressure on the students would be to answer the questions correctly. They would not need to worry if they had written the teacher's instructions incorrectly.

5)Solar energy equipment & supplies. We recently installed a solar system in a remote school in order to provide light for students to study at night but also to provde enough solar for a computer.

6)Water drilling equipment. The schools we work with in Kenya to date have no water, which means they have no bathrooms. BUT more importantly that also means the students have no access for a drink of water during their day at school.

Yes, your donations to the corporation are tax deductible.

How AKEC Can Assist: AKEC can assist through any one or a combination of several approaches. In particular, AKEC may:

Offer financial and material support to Kenya's schools and children on basis of economic need and academic achievement;

Offer financial and material support to schools & individual students based on their economic need. That is, making an award to a school or student, primary emphasis will be on economic need;

Offer financial and material assistance to schools and students on basis of their academic performance as demonstrated by performance at national examinations;

Offer regionally (provincial or district) based financial and material assistance depending on available resources;

Provide financial and material awards on basis of both need and academic performance; that is, AKEC will consider students who are economically needy but also have the best academic record from each district or province;

Provide financial and material incentive awards to schools through school parents' association to cultivate and encourage parental involvement in the education of their children;

Offer two one-time merit-based national awards -- financial or equipment -- to the best male and female students as adjudged by national examinations;

Provide one annual rotating award to the school that has done the best job in educating girls especially in leadership or community service. Or, make such an award to a single female student who, in course of a given period, has displayed outstanding leadership qualities and given exceptional service to her school or community. This award is named after the founder of AKEC, Ms. Becky Kunz.

How AKEC is Administered:

AKEC operates under a Board of Directors who take advice and counsel from two Advisory Boards - one Advisory Board is based in Kenya and the other in the USA. The Board of Directors is the corporate policy making organ of the corporation. It makes and formulates the policies and rules which govern the corporation's operations. The Board of Directors has a Chair person and a Vice-Chair person who also double up as the President and Vice president of AKEC. Other functions of the corporation are carried out by committees. The Advisory Boards advise the Board of Directors and assist with various functions and activities of the corporation such as raising funds, solicitation of materials and distribution of such resources. The Kenya-based Advisory Board helps the Directors identify the need, direct available resources to such a need, ensure specified assistance goes to the intended party; suggest timely and equitable distribution of AKEC's assistance.

Administratively, the corporation is managed by a President and a Vice President. Other chores are performed by and through various committees headed by chair people and dealing with such issues as fund-raising, solicitation of donations, education, board membership and budget.
