Chapter 4 (Continued)

WHAT THE READINGS SAY ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

DIET IN THE TREATMENT OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Proper diet is critical in the treatment of MS. To that end, it is recommended that you:
(1) avoid alcoholic beverages;

(2) avoid ingesting any products containing caffeine (found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and many carbonated beverages);

(3) avoid ingesting anything containing white sugar (as a substitute, the readings suggest using beet sugar, saccharin, or raw honey);

(4) avoid smoked foods;

(5) avoid foods containing nitrates, nitrites, benzoate of soda, calcium chloride, MSG, and other chemical additives and preservatives;

(6) never eat fried food of any kind;

(7) never eat pork (unless it is an occasional piece of very crisp bacon);

(8) never drink carbonated beverages;

(9) eat beef only occasionally, and then only lean cuts;

(10) eat Alaskan salmon often (ocean fish may be contaminated with mercury), as well as poultry (with the skin removed), and liver;

(11) avoid starchy foods like rice, potatoes, and pasta;

(12) fresh raw fruits, vegetables, and their juices should be part of your daily diet;

(13) avoid spicy foods;

(14) eat only breads and cereals of the whole grain variety (but first read the answer to Question 9 in Chapter 10);

(15) eat quantities of lettuce every day (it acts as a blood purifier);

(16) do not combine whole grain cereals or dairy products with citrus fruit or citrus fruit juices at the same meal;

(17) salads (preferably mixed with unflavored gelatin) made with grated or chopped raw carrots, lettuce, celery, watercress, radishes, onions, vine ripened or canned tomatoes, and cooked beets are excellent;

(18) avoid products containing saturated fat, such as butter, lard, whole milk, and cheese (a number of MS authorities suggest avoiding dairy products altogether);

(19) in regard to eggs, eat only the yolks, and make sure they are thoroughly cooked;

(20) do not eat if you are excited, angry, upset, or excessively fatigued;

(21) take several desiccated liver tablets with each meal;

(22) never ingest anything prepared or stored in aluminum;

(23) eat a few raw almonds every day;

(24) limit your salt intake to small quantities of kelp or sea salt;

(25) avoid raw apples unless you are on the apple cleansing diet (see Question 8 in Chapter 10);

(26) take, half an hour before breakfast, in continuous cycles of five days on and five days off, two drops of Atomidine (available from suppliers listed in the Appendix) in half a glass of distilled water;

(27) take a really good multivitamin/mineral supplement (or its equivalent) daily;

(28) avoid candy, cake, pies, pastries, and ice cream;

(29) try to drink six to eight glasses of distilled water daily;

(30) avoid products containing vinegar (such as pickles, relish, ketchup, mayonnaise, and salad dressing);

(31) have some unflavored gelatin with every meal (it aids absorption of nutrients);

(32) do not cook with condiments, including salt (it destroys much of the vitamin content of food);

(33) drink half a glass of warm distilled water upon arising in the morning (it helps rid the body of toxins);

(34) because digestion begins in the mouth, chew your food thoroughly (even liquids should be chewed two or three times before swallowing);

(35) take digestive enzymes with every meal;

(36) avoid products containing corn syrup;

(37) do not eat bananas unless vine ripened in your vicinity;

(38) have at least one leafy vegetable to every one of the pod variety;

(39) avoid any vegetable oil that has been hydrogenated (e.g., vegetable shortening and margarine) or otherwise processed or refined (with the exception of palm oil and coconut oil, which are both high in saturated fat, "cold pressed" oils are alright, and extra virgin olive oil is especially recommended);

(40) insofar as possible, eat mostly organic, locally grown foods (both raw and cooked);

(41) although not mentioned in the readings, avoid soy foods, anything containing aspartame, and food and drink that has been microwaved.
For more Cayce dietary information, read Nourishing the Body Temple, by Simone Gabbay.

The above dietary recommendations are significantly more stringent than the basic Cayce diet and have been formulated with special reference to his readings on multiple sclerosis. They have also taken into account certain complications of life in the 21st century.

In addition, the above suggestions assume that you have no food allergies, sensitivites, or intolerances. Unfortunately, however, many individuals afflicted with multiple sclerosis do indeed have such weaknesses, so it is very important to ascertain what these weaknesses are before instituting the above advice. Many people find the 96-Food Domestic IgG ELISA Food Intolerance Test to be especially helpful in pinpointing problem foodstuffs. Other people, like myself, have accomplished this task using one or more elimination diets. For more information about identifying and treating food allergies, read Food Allergies and Food Intolerance, by Jonathan Brostoff, M.D., and Linda Gamlin.

The above dietary recommendations also assume that you are not afflicted with an overgrowth of yeast in the intestinal tract, which appears to be an unusually common problem since the advent of antibiotics (unavailable in Cayce's day). For more information, visit

and read The Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook, by Jeanne Marie Martin.

ACID/BASE BALANCE

Another consideration is the great emphasis the readings place on maintaining a proper balance between foods that are acid reacting versus those that are alkaline reacting. By way of explanation, it may be said that practically everything we eat or drink will tend (based on the body's metabolic processes) either to acidify or alkalize the body (i.e., will cause the body to react with either an acid or a base as a metabolic end-product). And it is not always obvious what foods will have what effect in this regard. For example, drinking orange juice (though an acidic substance), will normally tend to alkalize the body. Edgar Cayce recommended that 80% of what we eat or drink be alkaline reacting and that 20% be acid reacting. Following the dietary advice above will tend to alkalize the body.

BEEF JUICE

As an easily assimilated, easily tolerated source of strength and vitality, the readings frequently recommended beef juice. For more information, visit

DURATION OF TREATMENT

Treating multiple sclerosis using the Cayce approach is typically a long-term proposition. Depending on the severity of the condition, it could take up to seven years (or more) to achieve the maximum therapeutic effect, although definite signs of improvement should appear within the first few months.

WHAT I DID

In regard to the treatment recommendations outlined in this chapter, I received massage therapy only sporadically (due to the expense and inconvenience involved), was sometimes remiss in following the dietary advice (due to a lack of self control), initially chose the radial appliance as the vehicle for administering gold vibratorially (for reasons discussed in Chapter 5), and took a different approach to placing the copper electrode (for reasons discussed in Chapter 6).
