The lecture on 'The Holistic approach to Wellness', at the Harris Public Library, 303 Clinton St. Woonsocket.RI. 02895 USA,on Wednesday the 25th. March 2009 at 7pm, was a great success,we had a capacity audience.Thanks to all who attended and the Library staff for their help.
At this office Dr. George E. King conducts a Naturopathic, Holistic Health (Wellness), AADP Board Certified Practice, focusing on educating clients on the natural ways of keeping healthy. To assist in this project, he gives free monthly lectures on health and fitness topics. Today with the coming of antibiotics to fight infections, it seemed that infectious disease was a thing of the past.But that did not happen. Also chemical medicines sometimes carries serious side-effects with their use.One of the most serious side-effects of chemical pain killers is addiction. Other serious side-effects may occur with the body's integral health systems , such as liver,kidney,stomach problems.
In an article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association july 28th.,2000, the problems of traditional medicine ara underscored . For instance, adverse side effects of medications affected 106,000 Americans per year.
Now, however ,we hear that the treatment of the future for weight loss could be Ritalin, a medication with side effects that can cause insomnia, rapid heart rate, nausea, hallucinations and more.
An article published in the national press on 6/26/03, reporting from a New England Journal of Medicine researchers report , stated that Doctors provide appropriate health care only about half the time. Latest information puts an army of Pharmaceutical sales reps. on the market, extolling the value of chemical drugs. Really makes you think!
In a free country such as the USA, it is about time that the public was given a choice in designating their Health Care Provider. Their choice to consult with a Herbalist,Naturopath, Homeopath, Holistic Health Consultant,or other Complementary / Alternative Therapist, and have this paid for (covered) by their Health Insurance.
Natural Health Practitioners and interested parties, should get together to lobby for this right for their clients interest.
The public should write to their political representatives, to secure this right of choice. It would be beneficial to the Health Care Industry, by adding competition on equal grounds and improve health care at the primary level.
The World Health Organization estimates that about 80% of the world's population is still using traditional medicine for primary health care ; however,they recognize that herb use is increasing. In countries other than America , the use of herbal therapy is much more widely used , accepted and integrated into the traditional medical therapies. In most European Countries, Africa, South America, and Asia, herbs are not considered 'alternative' nor 'unconventional' but integral to the health care system. In these countries the World Health Organization estimates over $12 billion in 1993 was spent on sales of herbal remedies. Homeopathy is also very popular in Europe and India, with a great following. Homeopathy was well represented in the USA,in the late 19C and early 20c., but was superseded by the introduction of modern ,faster acting synthetic remedies and other political factors. Homeopathy is now making a comeback in the USA, as an integral part of natural health care programs.
Millions of Americans , disenchanted with the negative side effects of traditional medications, are turning to the plant kingdom. They are begining to explore the real possibilities that natural remedies will work in harmony with the body, to enhance the immune system,to activate the vital force,or healing process , to bring about relief; instead of suppressing natural processes in the quest for healing. In the plant kingdom lies beneficial alternatives to traditional medicines that are safer, possibly cheaper and without the dangerous side effects that are encountered with chemical drugs.
Dr. George E. King believes in diversity in training and affiliation for Herbalists and other Natural health care providers. This is crucial for a vibrant Profession , otherwise we will end up being production line clones, all the same , with very narrow views. We have always to keep an open mind and think outside the box.
He is also pleased that Rhode Island is one of the four States that have passed Health Freedom Legislation (freedom to practice acts), the other States being MN., CA., and ID., and more than eight other states have introduced bills. This is an excellent start , as it would hopefully discourage the exclusionists, and give Practitioners the opportunity to serve the Community. Now we have to work toward getting Insurance to cover these services.

As the Government keeps attacking your right of choice in dietary supplements, we do not see them using the same force in putting out smoking. I wonder why? Could it be because they get financial gain from this Industry? I wonder!!!
A Surgeon Generals Report stated that 10 Million people died from smoking or smoking related diseases since 1964. It would seem that more resources should be focused on addressing the smoking issue.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE COMMENTARY:
If we want to retain our freedom of choice in Health Care we have to be diligent, and become more Politically active; and put a stop to what appears to be "Health Government" by the Pharmaceutical Industry and their Servants.

While visiting some of the Caribbean Islands(November 06) I met some very interesting people involved with conservation and natural therapy.
In St. Johns (US Virgin Island), I met a Cherokee Indian Tour Guide called Thundercloud, who was very knowledgeable about the local conservation project set up by the Clinton Administration. He was also had a great understanding about the herbs and plants used by the local healers. If you go to St. Johns, take a tour with Thundercloud and learn about the local history.
In Antigua I met with Dr.L.L. Gardner Ph.D.,NMD., a local Naturopathic Doctor, who had recently returned from a conference in the USA, updating on the latest therapies. He hosts a local TV.program on Tuesdays. If you are in need of a Naturopathic Doctor when in Antigua, you can contact Dr. Gardner, at the Caribbean Healthy Live Style Centre.
In Barbados, while driving through Bridgetown, the Capital,I noticed that Collins Pharmacy founded in the 19th century is still in business. This was of interest to me, because my grandfather and some of my older relatives worked there in the old days as Pharmacists. I remember my father telling me about this, when I was at school in London.
Barbados also offers its citizens free public education from age 3 years to University, also universal health coverage. If Barbados can offer this to its citizens, why can't we do the same for our citizens in the USA?

I attended a Town Hall meeting on the Dangers of Juvenile Alcohol Abuse at City Hall Woonsocket RI. USA, on 3-26-09. The main speaker to a capacity audience, was the Acting Surgeon General Rear Admiral Dr. Steven K.Galson, who gave a brilliant address on the Consequences of Alcohol Abuse on the Health of Young People.
I spoke to the Admiral after the conference about our work, he showed great interest, and I invited him to be a guest on my Radio Show, so in the future, you may hear an interview with the Surgeon General, on the Doctor George Show.
