We are near the Mullaghareirk Mountains home to breeding Hen Harriers, Red Grouse, Dippers & Merlin. This part of North Cork is especially good for bird watching. You are likely to hear Ravens calling overhead here most mornings & we have species list of around 50 birds seen in or over the garden inclulding Reed Buntings, Meadow Pipits, Linnets, Grey Wagtails & Snipe with Barn Owls & Long Eared owls breeding locally.

There are 3 waymarked looped walking trails nearby (free trail guides available) namely the Mullaghareirks, The Source of the River Blackwater & Mount Hilary. These walks are graded depending on experience & take in mountains & blanket bogs with miles of unspoilt countryside to explore. Eco tourism is high on our agenda. Packed lunch menu is available with free flask fill (bring your own flask). Up on the local bogs the peat (turf) is still cut & turned by local people for fuel in the winter



Native Red Squirrels can be seen in Island Wood Forest Recreation Area. This is a large mature wood 2 miles from Newmarket with miles of woods, river walks & a picturesque picnic area. It is suitable for buggies/wheelchairs in places. See Gallery for photos & information.

There are 8 Holy wells in Duhallow all within a short drive of the B&B including Trinity Well in Newmarket, St Johns Well & Tubrid Wells in Millstreet. Leaflets available.

ACCOMMODATION DETAILS

We have 2 en-suite guest rooms & can sleep 5 adults with ease plus extra children (in a travel cot bed & campbed); a ground floor (downstairs) room with king-size bed & upstairs we have an equally large room with 3 single beds. Colour TV, hairdryer, towels & hospitality tray are provided. Ample off road parking.

Breakfast is served 8-9am in our spacious breakfast kitchen overlooking the garden. Full Irish breakfast & smoked kippers available as well as vegan, vegetarian & GF options (please advise when booking). We have our own free range hens who lay all our eggs for us, children are welcome to help collect eggs & stroke the chicks.

THE LOCAL AREA:-

The local area is known as Duhallow, in the heart of the Sliabh Luchra region steeped in history & tradition. In the summer months there are evening of music, dance & story telling in nearby Rockchapael (see Links).

Newmarket is a small town with a selection of shops, pubs, cafes & a Chinese restaurant. Scullys Bar has traditional Irish music sessions every Monday night. There is a town park, children's playground & tennis courts. Just outside Newmarket is Shreelawn wood, here you will find Mylons cave, a small cave steeped in local folklore & tradition which is accessible with care. Close by is Meelin, the highest village in Ireland. Lime was extracted in the local area many years ago & old lime kilns can be seen dotted around the countryside.

Newmarket is the birthplace of Alice Taylor author of many famous works including "To School through the Fields". It was also the birthplace of John Philpot Curran (1750–1817), father of Sarah Curran (1782–1808), who was romantically linked to the nationalist leader Robert Emmet and memorialised in a poem by Thomas Moore.

Kanturk, just 5 minutes drive from Newmarket, has a good choice of restaurants & many bars including The Vintage & Bob's Bar which serves excellent food & has traditional Irish music sessions every Sunday night 6-8pm. Kanturk also has a 3 screen cinema, Kanturk Castle & a large riverside park with playground for children. Fly fishing for wild brown trout is available locally on the Rivers Dallau & Allow, day ticket needed. Also Ballyhass Lakes a managed trout fishery near Mallow - open all year. There you can also purchased day tickets for trout & salmon fishing on the nearby River Blackwater.
