Ignifuge pays you to simply have them as your browser's start page; they pay $.50 for every 10 visits, with a maximum of 10 visits per day ($15 per month). They also have a very high-paying referral system, $.20 for every 10 of your direct referrals' visits, and $.10 for three levels after that.
Ignifuge was somewhat of a pain in the butt; they made a little window pop-up each time you went to their homepage.
Tip: You can disable it by clicking on a "Click Here to Disable this Window" link.

Virtual Start Pagepays you $.05/$.10 every time you load a new browser window only if they have an advertiser's site to show you; if they don't, they send you to the default page you chose when you signed up. You can edit that later to maximize your earnings (I'll tell tell you why).You can also choose which kinds of sites and offers you would like to see. (Quite frankly I recommend allowing all of them, since you'll get paid a lot more.) This program is in full operation and is already paying. Good Tip: You can get the maximum possible earnings out of your start page by also joining Ignifuge and making Ignifuge your default page in your Virtual Start Page settings in your personal information page.

ItPaysToLearn is quite a new program. They pay you to answer their quizzes, puzzles,inviting and challenging your friends to also answer. You can choose your own level if you are in grade school or a genius. The pay is quite low but if your friends join in as your referral, plus their referral you can earn quite good. I recommend this highly since this program is quite educational.

GetPaid4 is one of the newer "pay to surf" companies but looks excellent for two reasons: they are already paying high payouts of 70% of ad revenues ($.48/hour for December, although this will probably drop a ways in January) and pay you for up to 75 hours of usage. My only problem with them is that their referral support is nearly nonexistent, and they actually require you to click on the ads the viewbar shows at least .5% of the time to keep your viewbar active; that's a little bit suspect. However, they don't require you to be doing anything on the web, you simply have to be active with your keyboard/mouse. All in all, I'd suggest this program for your own usage and be wary of any referral potential it has.

TheMail is a program that is run by the same company that runs PayBar. While it offers low pay rates, it also has an extremely high potential. TheMail pays you for referring others to its e-mail service--they run a free web-based e-mail service similar to Hotmail. You earn $.0025 for every e-mail the users you refer read, and $.0005 for every e-mail read by users THEY refer. While this sounds very low, think about how much e-mail you or people you know get on a daily basis, and you'll realize that it starts to add up fairly quickly. One strange thing about the program is that the referral system extends to -16- levels. I don't believe that anyone is going to make a WHOLE lot of money from this program, but I do think it's worth promoting (unlike its parent company, PayBar) and it has the advantage that if you use it for your OWN e-mail, every e-mail you send out is a potential referral, since your referral code and a short blurb are added to the bottom of every e-mail you send.

May 2000: I've begun checking my stats and I notice that I'm making about $2.50 a month from this program already, with only 8 direct referrals and 6 indirect. Not bad considering how skeptical I was about its potential, so I now recommend TheMail fairly highly.
