EARLY SETTLERS OF NORTON
SETH DORMAN - settled in what is now Mansfield. Birth and parentage unknown; possibly from Essex County as there were Dormans in that vicinity. One of the original members of the church. Married to Sarah Thayer, of Braintree, Aug. 13, 1715; and had 6 children. He died Dec. 21, 1741.JOSEPH DUNHAM lived on Lockety Neck leading to Copperworks. One of the original members of the church. He married Bethiah Chase, June 19, 1706; bot no record of children found.
EBENEZER EDDY - son of John and Deliverance (Owin) Eddy of Taunton; grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth Eddy of Plymouth; great grandson of Rev. William Eddy, of Cranbrook, Kent County, England. He was born May 16, 1676?. Married about 1702 to Mary Fisher?; and had eight children. Estate administrator appointed Dec. 4, 1756.
ELEAZER EDDY - brother of Ebenezer; born Oct. 16, 1681. Lived westerly of Mr. Crane's house. Married Feb. 6, 1722-3 to Elizabeth Cobb of Taunton; and had 10 children. He was a carpenter. He died Dec. 8, 1739. There was an Eleazer Eddy who married Elizabeth Randall, March 27, 1701; possibly he was the man, and that Miss Cobb was his second wife.
JOSEPH ELLIOT - lived in eeast part of Mansfield. Married Hannah ---? before 1711, and had 7 children. He died March/April, 1752. Ancestry unknown.
SAMUEL FISHER - son of Daniel and Hannah Fisher of Taunton. Born Dec. 3, 1669. His wife Lydia was appointed administratrix of his estate, Oct. 20, 1724.
ELEAZER FISHER - brother of Samuel; born May 12, 1673. Lived near Deacon Almond Tucker lived in 1855. Married Hannah Eddy on Dec. 24, 1696 and had 10 children. Died between Nov. 16 and Dec. 3, 1750, when his will was probated.
ISRAEL FISHER - born March 27, 1680. Supposed to have settled near his brothers, Samuel and Eleazer. One of the original members of the church. His wife's name was Susannah ---? who he married before 1710; and they had five children.
NATHANIEL FISHER - another brother, was born Feb. 9, 1681. Probably lived near Barrowsville. He married Deborah ---? about 1705 and had eight children. His will was dated March 27 and was probated April 11, 1761.
THOMAS GROVER - son of Thomas and Sarah (Chadwick) Grover of Malden was born March, 1668 or 9. Settled in West Mansfield and with his brothers Andrew and Ephraim bought land on Nov. 14, 1702 to build their houses. Erecting them to form a sort of equilateral triangle about forty or fifty rods apart. Thomas's house was on the road leading to the Christian Chapel. Andrew's house was on the road leading to Mansfield Centre; and Ephraim's house was on the road leadiing to the Depot at West Mansfield. Thomas married Mary Cox on July 29, 1697 and had 3 children born at Malden and 3 others at Norton.
ANDREW GROVER - brother of Thomas was born Oct. 1673. He married Mary ---? about 1697, and had 3 children born at Malden, and 7 in Norton. He died about 1751.
DEACON EPHRAIM GROVER - another brother was born about 1675. He married Mary Pratt at Malden in 1700, and they had 4 children. He was for some years deacon of the church in the North Precinct of Norton (Mansfield). He died Feb. 25, 1766.
JOHN HALL - may have been the son of Samuel Hall of Taunton; born Oct. 19, 1666. Lived in the Mansfield part of Norton, near to Cobbler's Corner, probably on the east side of Rumford River; and was at one time, one of the owners of a gristmill near Cobbler's Corner. He married Elizabeth King, Dec. 17, 1696. Supposed to have had a wife Esther in 1711, and a wife Ruth in 1720, and who married Sarah Welman on March 7, 1726-7. One of the original members of the church. Supposed to have been dead previous to 1738.
EBENEZER HALL - bother of John, born March 19, 1677. Married Jane Bumpus, June 22, 1704. No further information of what became of him.
NATHANIEL HARVEY - married Susannah ---?who was one of the first persons who called for aid from the town. Very few traces of him available. Some controversy between Norton and Taunton relative to her legal residence; but in April, 1713, the Court of Sessions decided that Mr. & Mrs. Harvey were inhabitants of Norton, and their relations were ordered to give assistance to Susannah.
JOHN HODGES - son of John and Elizabeth (Macy) Hodges of Taunton; grandson of William Hodges who was at Taunton in 1643; ansd was born April 5, 1673. He was town clerk for several years. He married Mary ---? and had 6 children. He died Jan. 20, 1743-4.
NATHANIEL HODGES - brother of John, was born April 2, 1675. He setled on the road about midway between Thomson Tripp and L. O. Makepeace's. He kept the first public house (1712). He married Hannah Dean and had nine children. He died March 3d, 1750?. His wife died Jan. 3, 1768 in her eighty fifth year.
SAMUEL HODGES - brother of Nathaniel was born May 20, 1678. Lived easterly of J. o. Messenger's. Much employed in town affairs. He kept a tavern from 1713 for 7 or 8 years. His first wife was Experience Leonard, married Dec. 31, 1700. She died Aug. 24, 1716. Second wife Mary Allen of Taunton he married March 7, 1717. She died Aug. 21, 1723. He had by both wives seven children, and probably died in April, 1725.
WILLIAM HODGES - brother of Samuel and Nathaniel was born June 6, 1682. Settled near the common graveyard. His wife's name was Hannah Tisdale whom he married Feb. 8. 1710. They had 2 children. She died March 7, 1715 aged 26. His second wife was ---Clapp, and they had 4 children. He did not remain in town many years; but probably on the death of his father in 1719, moved to the old homestead in Taunton, where he is believed to have died June 23, 1766.
JOHN LANE - son of Andrew and Tryphena Lane of Hingham and grandson of William Lane who came to Dorchester from England (?) in 1635-6 and died about 1654. John Lane was a shoemaker; and married, June 18, 1674, Mehitable Hobart. She died at Hingham, Feb. 15, 1690. His second wife was Sarah ---?. Settled in Norton about 1694 near the Attleboro line. Several of his children are recorded as born in Attleboro. He had twelve children. Through his son Ephraim are descended all the Lanes now of Norton. Ephraim is believed to be born of his first wife. Hingham records say Ephraim was born Jan 20, 1648. His gravestone is incorrectly marked.
