MICHAEL JACOBS PHOTOJOURNALISM (MJP)

Biography
While a high school senior, Michael Jacobs laid the foundation for his career as a photographer, writer, poet, soldier, teacher, artist, videographer and father when he confidently walked into the editorial offices of a sleepy northern California newspaper. The managing editor became his mentor, and after teaching Michael how to write in the style of the newspaper, allowed him to take photos for the articles he wrote.
Michael entered college while working at the newspaper, but then decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict and subsequently became the youngest military photojournalist. His tour took him from the Navy's world-renowned photography school, to the decks of a Pacific Fleet command ship, to duty in the Philippines and South East Asia, and finally to the elite Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group and Antarctica.
After leaving active military service in 1976, Michael moved to London where he succeeded as a freelance photojournalist on famed Fleet Street. Three years later, due to the immense interest of magazines in the glitterati of Tinseltown, he was prompted to re-locate to Los Angeles. Michael quickly became the Hollywood celebrity event photographer of choice, and has been interviewed for many articles and television segments. Most of the world's major celebrities and notable politicians living today have been photographed by Michael. For ten years he documented super agent Irving "Swifty" Lazar's star-studded Oscar night party.
Aside from editorial assignments, he has earned respect from top public relation and marketing firms, entertainment industry companies, and celebrities themselves for his personable character and candid photographic style. Out of necessity due to the time constraints associated with photographing personalities for newspapers, he became a master of the "ten-minute" portrait. Michael also became involved in campaigns for environmental, native American, the disabled and just-political causes. He has also served on the board of directors of several non-profit organizations.
In 1992, Michael became a favorite photographer of Barbra Streisand and also worked for the California Democratic Party during Bill Clinton's run for president. His recent work with the president marked the fifth presidential campaign Michael had photographed. During Clinton's first inauguration, Michael was highly considered for the position of White House photographer. Currently he continues his political activities by photographing for the campaign of Senator Barbara Boxer.
His photographs and articles have won numerous regional and national awards including Military Pictures of the Year, Chief of Navy Information Photojournalism Awards, East Bay Prep Writers Association and Sigma Delta Chi. Michael's work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles and London World Trade Centers, San Diego City Library, Phippin Museum of Western Art and the Prescott Fine Arts Association. For a quarter of a century he has been an educator, teaching at UCLA, USC, University of LaVerne, Yavapai, Chabot and Los Angeles City Colleges. Michael also has lectured to American Society of Magazine Photographers, Professional Photographers of America, Biological Photographers of America and Loyola Marymount University.
