Re-power with Diesel

As you read on the main page, I am keen to re-power with diesel. The advantages are greater range for cruising, less volatile fuel, less ignition and electrical problems, more efficient running and cheaper fuel.
Although none of the early Mariners left the factory with diesel engines, I have heard of a few that have been converted and with success, I might add.
I was considering a Ford V8 diesel but I am also of the opinion that a smaller lightweight high-speed diesel such as the Nissan RD28 (pictured above) and LD28, the earlier version, would be ideal. These high speed Japanese diesels are light weight, 2.8 litres, 6 cylinders in line, compact, clean, dry from oil leaks, and very reliable. They are also available in a turbo version.

Many such engines have been used in boats around this size back in New Zealand and Australia where they have been proven on coastal cruising with great success. These engines are also a popular automotive re-power option and are commonly used in light trucks, 4x4s, pickups, and passenger cars. The same engine comes as standard option in Nissan Laurels, Skylines and Nissan patrol 4x4.

I was able to obtain some information from Carver regarding the evaluation of diesel in the early 80's in a Mariner 28. Here is an extract from a letter Mr Rich Brown of Carver Yachts sent me:

Hello Paul,

Was able to turn up one performance report with diesels, sea trialed in 1983. Carver installed twin Volvo TAMD 40's, 165hp each with a gear reduction of 1.52:1. The boat ran 24 mph @ cruise and 28 mph at WOT, with 16 x 18 3-bladed props. Fuel efficiency was 1.4 miles per gallon at cruise.

Hope this provides some insight with your re-power project.

Best Regards,
Rich Brown

I would be interested to hear from any one who has a diesel Mariner or knows of one.
