Mental Illness Does Not Actually Have to Exist
The American Psychiatric Association has taken the position that it is an antiquated position that mental illness does not actually exist. Furthermore, since 1995 it has been the position of the American psychiatrists that an enlightened view of mental illness is that people afflicted with what is called mental illness have structural defects in the brain and are therefore permanently ill without the use of dangerous and painful psychiatric drugs such as neuroleptics and lithium. These drugs mimic mental illness and cause life threatening side effects in people who take them.
This "structural defect position" is an archaic theory which turns logic around and which has no scientific evidence to support it. This theory robs those who may be suffering from what is called mental illness from all hope of complete cures, which are possible with common sense, human compassion and natural health care approaches which are safe and effective.
Consider that the brain is malleable and can change it's structure depending on life s experiences. Therefore,the structure of the brain not only determines function, how you use your brain also in reverse determines structure. States of mind called mental illness can be taught to people with normal brains, just as states of mind accepted by society as normal can be taught.
Of course to have the brain function well we must have a baseline of good nutrition. Scientific research has confirmed in recent decades the vital significance of appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals along with other nutrients in our diets to make optimal, healthy functioning of the brain possible. Once this premise is accepted as scientific fact we learn that there is unlimited potential for mental health instead of mental illness if you and others in society you deal with are willing to commit yourselfs to achieving wellness.
I support a social view of mental health and mental illness. It is no accident when peoples productive lives are wasted secondary to intervention by psychiatrists largely due to the societal stigma which the psychiatrists themselves enforce regarding such interactions coupled with the defeatist position of a structural view of mental illness. In such manners the psychiatrists can not lose their cases against the mental health of their patients.
Furthermore, psychiatrists consistently misdiagnose people as mentally ill who are suffering from such factors as inhalant and food allergies and sensitivities, vitamin deficiencies, electromagnetic interference, physical deconditioning, air pollution, electromagnetic interference, insufficient sunlight, physical deconditioning, overcrowding, drug side effects, divorce, forced retirement, child abuse, fear from being imprisoned in jail or a mental hospital and emotional and social factors such as a lack of meaning in life, lack of compassion or a warm, loving relationship.
Human companionship and compassion, good nutrition, exercise, fresh air, encouragement of normal human sexuality, good entertainment and rest in the form of adequate sleep and meditation are all integral parts of a formula that can assist the brain in achieving mental health. And, at all times it must be remembered that no person can experience real health and freedom without financial independence. Therefore, good career opportunities with proper financial incentives are also a vital part of the formula of mental health.
It also should never be forgotten that in order to prevent and cure states of mind called mental illness people must have their freedom protected. Court orders for unwanted psychiatric treatment rob people of their basic freedoms and cause mental illness. Psychiatrists who make a living this way have no interest in anyones mental health and their medical licenses should be revoked.
And, so the proper attitudes about mental health leaves us with an understanding that mental illness does not have to actually exist.
