Presidency in Mexico
After 71 years of the same political party holding office. Finally, on Sunday July 2nd, Mexico has a new political party in power.
But, who is the new President of Mexico? What are his plans for Mexico? In order for his plans to be successful, what changes will he have to make.
The big question now is, would there be a difference now that PAN holds the Presidential office? What can the new President do to resolve some of the problems he has inherited?
This website is to try to answer the above questions. But first allow me to give you a little bit of Mexico's history.
Mexico’s History of two political parties
Mexico has several political parties, it seems that every time an election comes around a new political party has been created. Two parties have been active for at least 60 years are PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) and PAN (Partido Accion Nacional).
For the past 71 years, Mexico has been under the power of PRI. This political power has been active since the early 1900’s. It started out as PNR, then PRM and to PRI in 1929. People in Juarez, Chihuahua refer to this party as “the party for the rich”.
On the other hand, the party that has been known as “the party of the poor” is the PAN party. PAN was born in 1939, but began to be taken seriously in 1946 thanks to Manuel Gomez Morin, whose only goal was for this party to stabilize the electoral process. In its early years, no one believed that this political party would ever make, but it has proven all those people wrong.
Who is the newly elected President of Mexico?
His name is Vicente Fox Quesada, who is the current governor of Guanajuato. He was born on July 2nd in Mexico City. He is the father of four children Ana Cristina, Vicente, Paulina y Rodrigo. He was the president of the Coca Cola Company in Mexico and Central America. He is the founder and President of a home for children called “Amigo Daniel”. This is the home of many homeless children and children whose parents are dead. This is where they receive love and affection.
In the early 1980’s he joined the Partido Accion Nacional. Tired of the corruption and bad government that exists in Mexico, he decided to begin an active political career. He himself has been the victim of such corruption in 1991 while running for the government seat in Guanajuato. Throughout his political activities he has criticized the political party that has been in power, PRI.
What has he done as Governor?
As governor of Guanajuato he has worked to improve its economy, has promoted tradings from Guanajuato to other countries and has consolidated many small businesses.
Fox’s efforts has made Guanajuato have one of the most dynamic economies of the country. It also has an unemployment rate of less than 2%. His political goal is to make Guanajuato a place where there will be opportunities for everybody. He believes that the best route for Mexico to succeed is for the people to succeed first. For this reason he has placed the major part of state money in public education. In Guanajuato 99% of the children are attending school and his government awards more that 55,000 scholarships.
Problems he has inherited
Vicente Fox has inherited numerous problems.
One of its most important problems is poverty. How can poverty be confronted?
Mexico suffers deeply from corruption. How can the new President deal with the corruption Mexico suffers from?
How can he reconstruct the citizens trust in the government?
The most important problem that Vicente Fox should attack is poverty. But, how can he decrease a problem that increases every day?
The first thing I believe he should so is, raise minimum wage. Hundreds of companies are leaving the US to go to Mexico because of its cheap labor. At the same time, thousands of Mexican lives are lost when they try to come to the US to work to earn dollars. If Mexico would raise its minimum wage, its people would feel encouraged to work in Mexico and earn an honest "peso." They wouldn’t leave their country and their family. At the same time these people wouldn't feel tempted to join the drug trafficking.
I feel this solution will benefit both countries. Americans wouldn’t lose their jobs and Mexicans wouldn’t lose their lives.
Also, Mexican citizens would earn more money and better their way of living. More children will continue their education because now parents would be able to afford to educate them.
Secondly, Mexico should also begin some sort of aide program. Something similar to the Medicaid and Food Stamp program that we have here in the US. The government should also create a way to keep track of men or women leaving children behind. Forcing them to pay child support and/or allimony.
Finally, Mexico should encourage other countries to establish companies in this country. Paying Mexican citizens what those companies will pay their citizens in their country will probably never happen. But, encouraging foreign companies to open their business in Mexico will diminish unemployment.
What can Fox do to rid Mexico of the corruption it suffers from?
He will need to form an honest government. A government that will create and enforce fiscal policies. Allowing those enforcing such policy to come and observe and check up on expenses. Those checking should demand documentation for everything that has been paid for.
Those people with political power caught abusing their power should be punished with its highest level of punishment. For this, laws and punishments should be modified. Modified in a way that those people will be penalized for many years during and/or after they leave office, including the President himself.
No one should be above the law. As long as evidence, that is not tampered with, finds those people guilty, they should pay for their corruption. Also, if people are caught tampering with evidence, regardless of their position, they should be penalized with jail time for their crime. Unlike now, the federal police should not have so much power. There should be a government agency having some sort of control of this department. This should be done to avoid encarcerating innocent people, like in the case of those in jail for the crime of Paco Stanley, a famous Mexican television host.
How will he make Mexico a trusted place?
For the past several years, Mexico’s insecurity has increased. Organized crime and delinquency have taken over the streets and cities of Mexico, due to police corruption and inability of enforcing the law. Mexican citizens are tired of the insecurity they live every day.
Fox would have to reform the system of public security and justice to bring back the trust that police officials have lost. Punishments should increase in years for those high crimes such as in rape, theft, kidnapping, homicide, organized delinquency, like those crimes committed to infants and toddlers.
Once its citizens start seeing that criminals are not let free so easily like now and that police officials are honest people serving to protect and serve the community; Mexico would go back to being a beautiful place to live and visit.
