One of the most spectacular events in surf lifesaving competition, the surf boat race involves a five person team and an 8 meter wood and fibreglass surf boat.
Surf Boat racing always provides plenty of thrills and spills, particularly when there is a surf running. The crew rows out through the surf and around a buoy approximately 500meters out to sea and then returns to the beach. Crews compete in one of four grades - Open, Under 18, Reserve and Under 21.
Metropolitan Caloundra u/18 Boat Crew is a team of champions which include Wade Clark (stroke), Mark McManus (2nd stroke), Alec Saxvik (2nd bow) & Jon Dunkley (bow). They form a championship winning crew that is being swept by the great John 'Snapper' Thurtell who has put countless hours into helping the boys acquire a strong, powerful & winning technique.
All four of the boys are very talented Rugby League players and are members for the Caloundra Sharks and the Sunshine Coast Falcons. Wade, Mark & Alec also play for the Wide Bay Bulls. Jon wasn't good enough to make it!!
With an excellent boat and 'top of the line' oars, Met Caloundra u/18 boat crew will be looking to go all the way this season with gold medal wins at Branch, State & Aussie titles !!
With four of the fittest, strongest and mentally toughest guys in the rowing world, Metropolitan Caloundra u/18 boat crew can match it with even the top 'A' crews on their day and it is with this form that will give them the edge over their opposition.
If you are fortunate enough to be at a Surf Boat carnival, keep an eye out for the red, white and blues as no doubt they will be keeping the proud 'Mets' tradition up of bringing home the gold medal.
