A WINTER'S'S GIFT

A flash of russet red fur
On the snow covered hill
Catches my eye

The fox pauses in mid-stride
In a photo-op perfect pose
Saucily glancing over its
Shoulder at me

Whiskers glisten with
Ice crystals of diamond like
Radiance in the sun

For a moment I am blinded
As the light splinters into
Flashes of pure blue white
Until he turns away

Then like a surprise gift
Hidden in the wrapping
At the bottom of the box

His mate joins him
From the den
Camouflaged by
Fallen leaves

In no hurry
And in the perfect stillness
Of the day

They trot across the ridge
Beyond the tree line
And out of view
