John McGanty Sage Hill Group Campground Site
This is a campground not too far north of Santa Barbara. To get there, take Hwy. 101 just past Santa Barbara and exit at State St./Cachuma Lake/Hwy. 154. After exiting, go straight through the first traffic light (State St.) and turn right at the second light (marked San Marcos Pass/Cachuma Lake/Hwy. 154) Go 10.3 miles and turn right onto Paradise Rd. (a large sign marks this turn).
There aren’t any stores near the campground, so you’ll want to bring everything you need, including ice, which will be a challenge in the warm weather.
At 4.4 miles, turn left for the Los Pietros Ranger Station and Sage Hill Group Campground. After a couple hundred yards, the road bends around to the right, at a sign marked Sage Hill Group Site.
There are five group sites. Each site has a minimum of 25 people and a max. of 50 people. 3 & 4 are intended to be used together, which would be fine if you have both, but the picnic tables for the two are right next to one another, so quite unpleasant if you only had one of these two sites.
#1-Sycamore – the most remote of the sites. Less shade than 2. Both 1 and 2 have fixed picnic tables around the fire ring, making a good circle for about 20, but unworkable for more than 25 people (even though that’s the minimum), unless some people sit on the table, feet on the benches, with some chairs on the ground quite close to the ring.
#2-Live Oak – Better shade and more attractive than 1. First choice, though 1 would also work. Both 1 and 2 are very roomy
#3-Pine -- not so good
#4-Cactus – fire ring is not well-situated for a circle of chairs
#5-Caballo – this is a horse site, next to the camp host, less desirable
