Karnak owes its buildings to the efforts of successive pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period (about 2,000 years). During the New Kingdom, Ancient Thebes (Luxor) rose to become Egypt's religious centre and Karnak, on the Nile's East bank, developed into a huge temple city. Numerous cult establishments, processional routes with shrines at various stages along the route, places administrative buildings and storehouses were established and Karnak became the largest religious site the world has ever seen.
