more about Carol: The Herald, Sharon, Pa. Published Tuesday,
April 17, 2001 A chill rain spritzed outside Toni Hozick?s Ellwood City home one recent evening, but the atmosphere inside was decidedly warm as she prepared for a meeting of the Mothers Regular Session Club. Hozick had spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove, garlic biscuits in the oven and her three young children wandering in and out of the kitchen, dining and living rooms, as members of the club rang the doorbell. It was Hozick?s turn to host the six Ellwood-area women, who for 40 years have been meeting monthly, except for summers, to eat dinner, play cards and talk. In so doing, they carry on what experts say is a time-honored tradition of women who support each other through decades of life changes. Hozick represents one of those life changes: As the daughter of one of the original members, Dolly Santillo, also of Ellwood City,Hozick is the second generation to join the club. Each gathering is at a different member?s home the third Wednesday of the month, except for July and August, to give the women a chance to vacation. The group originated in October 1960, when Santillo and her former classmates at Lincoln High School in Ellwood, then all about 20 years old, decided to start a card club. The classmates were Karen Hazen of North Sewickley Township, Mary Jo Vesco of Ellwood and Ruth Ann Ambrose of New Brighton. The first meeting was that month at Santillo?s house, according to notes
Santillo took as the club?s first and only secretary. Carol Hairhoger of New Castle, Santillo?s sister and Hozick?s aunt, joined about a year later. Then 25 years ago, Kathy Liller of North Sewickley, a neighbor of Hazen?s, also joined. Hozick, the youngest member at age 34, joined 11 years ago, shortly after she got married. "I also married Ruth?s cousin, but we were friends first," said red-haired Hazen. "We were sisters and always friends," said Hairhoger, with short, blond hair. In addition to the evening meetings, Ambrose invites the women during the summer to her cottage at Pymatuning Lake. There, the club members go out on the water on the Ambroses? pontoon boat and continue their bonding in the great outdoors. Another four or five members joined over the years, but they
have moved from the region or dropped out. The club has continued,
though the officers never changed. In August 1973, Santillo stopped
taking notes. She began again last October, in commemoration of the
club?s 40th anniversary. As old friends do, the members have the knack
of picking up conversations from the previous month and of finishing
each other?s sentences. "Did you read this?" Hairhoger asked Ambrose of Nicholas Sparks? novel, "The Notebook," placing it near her purse. "It was one of the best books I ever read," Ambrose said. Hozick tried to shoo her three school-aged children downstairs to watch "Survivor: The Australian Outback." "You have to let me know what?s going on," she said, trying to persuade them to leave. "I?m waiting for Jerri to be kicked" out of the tribe. Then Hozick fussed in the kitchen, preparing the shells with sauce, sausage, meatballs and tossed salad. When everything was ready, she asked the other women if they wanted to eat."Yes, we do," her mother said. "Yes, we certainly do," Ambrose echoed, and the women, in pants, sweaters and blazers, gathered around the table. Hozick had fussed with the table, too, with her collection of dogwood flower-patterned Homer Laughlin china set on a coordinating dogwood-flowered tablecloth. As Hozick set out the meal, one of the women said, "She?s a great cook." In addition to the food she prepared,Hozick also provided favors for the members: ceramic flowerpots filled with seeds, a smaller pot and candy, enclosed in shamrock-bedecked clear wrap. "I joined this club for the candy," she joked. "Instead of getting just one piece Mum used to bring me, now I can eat all the candy I want." "Toni, were these the dishes you found? What were you looking for?" Santillo asked her daughter of a recent shopping trip. "A teapot," which she didn?t find, Hozick said. Hozick?s aunt noted that the last time the women gathered at her niece?s home, the dining room was where
the living room is now, and vice versa. "You change rooms around like
people change clothes," Hairhoger said. The women enthusiastically began eating. After a short silence, the conversation turned toward food -- and dieting. "I went on that carbohydrate diet where you don?t eat carbohydrates," said the slim Hozick. "Well, as soon as you go off it" you gain it back. "You know when I lose weight? During the Christmas holidays," Hairhoger said. "Because I do all that baking, I can?t stand to look at it. If I?m going to work, I should work in a bake shop." During dinner, the women aired their mild complaints and swapped stories. Ambrose complained she was more disciplined when she worked.Hozick griped about her computer problems. Ambrose then told a story about a woman who once worked with her: "Her car was smoking, and the repairman asked her when was the last time she put oil in the engine. She said, ?You?re supposed to put oil in it?? She had completely burned up the engine." It?s not unusual for women to rely on each other for different kinds of support and interaction, said University of Pittsburgh Associate Professor Lisa Brush, a member of the sociology and women?s study departments. Brush said the members of the Mothers Regular Session club are carrying on that tradition, and it?s also not unusual for them to have continued for four decades. Brush said that even she has the motto, "No eatin?, no greetin?." The women played several hands of the "31" card game at the recent meeting, but are casual about the games. "It?s a neat place to go," Hozick said later, of listening to the older women?s stories of growing up and young married life. "These women
can take you back to this wonderful life I?ll never get to experience,
when people left their doors open and you could let your kids go to the Dairy Queen. They can take you back to a peaceful place." Hozick has also relied on the other women?s advice on how to get through the tough times of child rearing. At the meeting, she told the other women she hadn?t kept in touch with any of her friends from school. "Toni, you better get a few (friends), because in later years you?ll need them," Hairhoger, her aunt, said dryly. Hozick chose the Mothers Regular Session club as her way of connecting. "It?s fun. They?re fun," said Hozick, who is about 25 years younger than the other members. Her sister Carrie, 36, has attended some sessions but has not joined the club on a regular basis. "They?re a heck of a bunch of women," Hozick said with admiration. "They?re there when you need them." occ: edu: Ellwood City,Pa.
