My name is Martyn Chappell, I was working in a battery factory for 16 years making lead acid batteries working in lead dust and acid.
After a few years of starting with the company I developed problems with my right elbow, left wrist, my neck and my lower back all work related which caused me to have 7 months off sick.
I had problems lifting with my right arm; I was always in pain with my back especially when I stood up from sitting down as I couldn’t straighten up very good because of the pain.
I also had chronic pain in my left wrist and the back of my neck having functional difficulties with my fingers on my left hand.
I was always walking about like an old man, I had problems sleeping, I was always tired and sluggish after waking up, I just didn’t want to know because I was always so tired and lacking in energy and when I would visit friends I was always struggling to stop myself falling asleep. I was also overweight…I was fat!!!
I was working shifts which gave me no quality of life as I never had any time for myself or any one I was always rushing around and always running out of money before the end of the month before my next pay day.
I was tired and stressed out.I could never seem to break free from the daily frustrations of life.
I had a huge desire for change but I had very little experience, I began looking around for something else as I did not know what the health risks would be when I started back to work or what the future would hold for me.
