Butch and Queenie![]()
Queenie was raised by our cousins Tim and Tom Williams. When they went into the Air Force they gave her to us. She was a grand and wonderful dog. Tim and Tom raised her well with great tricks and she was such a good dog. She was loved by all our neighbors as well. She would go visit them, knocking at their door and they would let her in. She guarded our cul-de-sac when we kids would play in the street so that no cars could come into the circle.

MEMORY LANE
Written by Martha (Marti) J. Williams Andrew
I was raised by my parents; Fran and Charlie Williams in the Village of Greenhills, Ohio. It was and still is a wonderful place to grow up. The following is an article I wrote several years ago for the village newspaper; THE GREENHILLS JOURNAL. It is about the street I grew up on and their annual Corn Roast.
I have fond, fond memories of bygone Labor Days in Greenhills. Each year over the Labor Day weekend many of our neighbors would join together to celebrate the holiday and the end of summer vacations. The following is a story about a street in my town I lived in and one of its many wonderful reasons it was and is a great place to live. This is typical of events our community held throughout the year and still does to this day.
I lived not only in a unique Village of Greenhills but I lived on what I thought was a very unique street: Brompton Lane. Each year the residents of Brompton Lane looked forward to the one last get-together before the school began, summer ending and winter blowing onto our street: The Annual Brompton Lane Corn Roast.
I would wake up on Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend and hear people talking, children yelling and children’s wagon wheels going by beneath my bedroom window. The whole street came alive. Each family would bring their picnic table which was usually loaded on one of the kid’s wagons. Children pulling or pushing the heavy load would stop and laugh so hard when a table fell off the wagon. The tables were carried down to large field in the common area behind our homes; and placed in a circle around where a big bonfire would be built later that evening.
We, as kids, were so excited! Such fun and anticipation of wonderful food, dancing, and especially staying up late was in store.
As the day wore on, former residents of Brompton Lane arrived. They just knew we would have the Corn Roast again that year. Picnic tables were in place with colorful table cloths. The bar-b-que grills were in place roasting the corn on the cob; soft drinks and other beverages were iced down in big barrels; the wood dance floor was being erected and the electrical lights were strung. We all began to eat and visit and enjoy each other.
When sun went down the bonfire ceremony began. There was always a Master of Ceremony and a proclamation was read and then the fire was lit. Someone usually had something big to throw on the fire such as when Charlie Williams threw on his old, rotten shed. Or, someone else would throw on an old picnic table. We all sat and watched the fire, dazzled by the high flames. Everyone “oohed and aahed” and singing began.
Later that evening music was played on a record player and some folks danced on the wooden dance floor while others watched and talked. Children were slowing down and even some fell asleep on someone’s lap. And, other kids were taken home and put to bed to dream of the wonderful time they had. The evening went on until the bonfire went out; sometimes into the very early morning.
Does Brompton Lane still celebrate Labor Day? I’m sure, even today, neighborhoods throughout Greenhills still have similar wholesome, fun, family events. What a wonderful place to raise children.
