Schumann, Brahms and Daniel lones in Bangor
On Friday 23 March (7.30pm) at the Prichard Jones Hall, you will have the opportunity to hear Schumann's Cello Concerto, alongside Brahms' beautiful First Symphony and Daniel Jones's short Symphony No 2. Schumann's Concerto was completed in 1850, shortly after he became the music director of Dusseldorf. It is considered one of his more daring and adventurous works, due to the length of the main themes and the other-worldly quality of the opening.
Daniel Jones (1912-1993) was born in Pembrokeshire and wrote his final ~ Symphony, No 12 in 1985. At sixteen minutes from beginning to end, the work is exceptionally shorter in length than a more traditional symphony. A friend of Dylan Thomas, perhaps he is better known for writing the music fora radio version of Under Milk Wood in 1954.
Russian Romance in Llandudno
On Sunday 25 March (7.30pm) at Venue Cymru you can enjoy Tchaikovsky's passionate Symphony No 5, Beethoven's Leonore Overture No 3 and another brilliant performance by Emmanuelle Bertrand, this time of the Cello Concerto by Lalo. Discovered by a wide public when she won the young soloist category at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in 2002, Emmanuelle Bertrand is today among the foremost representatives of the French school of cellists. In 1999 she met the composer Henri Dutilleux whose support has been essential since :
"Among the young artists of her generation, Emmanuelle Bertrand belongs to those who impressed me the most... Her interpretation and the transparency of her playing filled me with great satisfaction I do not hesitate to say that is for me a real revelation ".
