There will be three ‘Made in Liverpool’ productions for the new Autumn-Winter season 2007 at the Liverpool Playhouse.

• Rough Crossings
As the American War of Independence reaches its climax, a plantation slave and a British Naval Officer embark on an epic journey in search of freedom. Divided by barriers of race but united in their ambitions for equality, their convictions will change attitudes towards slavery forever. Headlong Theatre's Artistic Director Rupert Goold (Paradise Lost and Faustustor Headlong, The Tempest West End and Scaramouche Jones Liverpool Playhouse) directs a new adaptation of Simon Schama's provocative bestseller by award-winning writer Gary! Phillips. This compelling true story is a co-production between Headlong Theatre Company, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Birmingham Rep and Lyric Hammersmith to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire.

• The Flint Street Nativity
Back by popular demand, the kids of Flint St Primary bring a festive repeat of the world's greatest story ever told. Psychotic innkeepers, angels in fear, a bossy Mary and a donkey whose lost his stick insect make this family comedy a must for any child who's ever been in a nativity or any adult who's watched one through their fingers. Written by Tim Firth (All Quiet on the Preston Front, Calendar Giris and Kinky Boots) and directed by Matthew Lloyd (The Odd Couple, Hedda GaWerand Fly) with original songs by Tim Firth. I Am Shakespeare
Starring former Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Mark Rylance, and co-directed by Matthew Warchus (The Lord of the Rings, True West, and Art), with a cast including Sean Foley (The Play What I Wrote), this screwball comedy is sure to bring a whole new twist to Shakespeare. Frank Charlton is a schoolteacher who, through his subversive internet show, explores his obsession with the authorship of the Shakespeare plays. When Frank suddenly finds himself confronted with the real William Shakespeare, mayhem ensues as he desperately tries to interview other characters from the past to discover who the real author is, whilst trying to avoid the Police investigating a mysterious body. The Changeling

Applauded throughout the country for their vivid productions of new and classic plays, English Touring Theatre come to the Liverpool Playhouse with this electrifying Jacobean revenge drama. Written in 1621 by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley The Changeling is often hailed as the greatest tragic play in English after Shakespeare. Beatrice-Joanna wants to marry Alsemero but her father has other plans. Meanwhile, her servant - the hideous de Flores - would do anything to win her. This thrilling domestic drama about the conflicting claims of familial duty and sexual desire is a co-production with Nottingham Playhouse.

The Suitcase Kid

Watershed Theatre return to the Playhouse following their highly successful tour of children's laureate Jacqueline Wilson's Midnight in 2005. This time they have joined forces with The Orange Tree Theatre to bring us Jacqueline's funny and touching The Suitcase Kid, adapted and directed by Vicky Ireland. 10 year old Andrea used to live happily with her family: Mum, Dad...and Radish, who lives in her pocket and shares all her secrets. But then it all went wrong: Mum went to live with Bill and Dad went off with Carrie. And Andrea was expected to shuttle between the two - living out of a suitcase. Even worse, she's now got five step-brothers and sisters!
