People, Places and Plot - Oldham Literature Festival 2007

October sees a packed month of performance, poetry and readings as Oldham Literature Festival 2007 explores the universal theme of Identities to discover ‘what makes us who we are?’

We’ve a great line-up of big name guests - including Linton Kwesi Johnson, Zahid Hussain and Melvin Burgess - fun events for kids, and the chance to unearth your past and explore identity at a personal level by tracing your family tree.

There’s something for everyone as we examine the people and places that shape our lives at venues across the Oldham borough.

Internationally renowned reggae-poet and inspirational wordsmith Linton Kwesi Johnson is one of the world’s most celebrated black poets. A member of the Black Panthers in his teens, Linton has engaged generations of audiences with his politically charged brand of words and music. Don’t miss the chance to witness this living legend in the intimate surroundings of The Performance Space.

Zahid Hussain is a British Asian writer, born and raised in nearby Darwen, Lancashire. His first novel The Curry Mile is a beguiling tale of modern life within the Manchester Asian community. Set in the heart of the city’s cut-throat restaurant trade, Zahid’s work speaks volumes about the experiences of migrant communities in the UK today.

Talented thriller writer Chris Simms visits Uppermill, and ‘the scene of the crime’, for his latest detective novel Savage Moon, set amid the moors of Saddleworth. While Chadderton’s high-flying entrepreneur and author Lisa Tse takes time out from her Sweet Mandarin restaurant to talk about the novel of the same name - a gripping tale of three generations of Chinese women that spans the globe.

Teenagers will be thrilled to hear that Melvin Burgess is in town. With over twenty bestselling novels published, Melvin knows the hearts and minds of Britain’s young adults like no other writer. He will be reading excerpts from some his most pivotal, and notorious, works including Junk and Doing It and taking part in a Q&A session.

Elsewhere, there’ll be plenty of clowning around at Circus at Central when Oldham Library comes alive for a fun-packed morning of circus skills and story telling, and an opportunity for budding performers to get up and have-a-go at our Poetry Slam.

And our two Who Do You Think You Are? sessions will give budding genealogists the opportunity to delve deep into their family past. With a talk and workshop from the experts we’ll give you the tools you need to start tracing your family tree and discover who you really are.

We take off our dust jacket and open the Festival pages to the public on Thursday 4 October with a fitting celebration of Oldham’s rich and diverse cultural identity. Get Together sees children from schools across the borough coming together to share their own poetry from a specially commissioned new book Get Together: One World of Folk.
