LAS VEGAS NEWS:
The Sahara announced the signing of magician Steve Wyrick to an 8-year contract. A new 950-seat theater will be built.
Harrah's announced that Clint Holmes will replace Spellbound. Holmes will star in a revamped 510-seat theater beginning in January 2000.
The Maxim Hotel has reopened 400 rooms + one restaurant. The casino remains closed.
Brugnara Properties of San Francisco announced the purchase of the Silver City Casino and the Las Vegas Plaza shopping center for more than $30 million.
The Stardust Hotel/Casino signed Wayne Newton to a multi-year contract. The existing showroom will be remodeled and Newton will begin performing, six nights a week, in January, 2000. He will also appear on New Years Eve and January 1, 2000.
Strip hotel/casinos have had to drastically cut their New Years room rates after encountering stiff opposition to the astronomical rates. Some rates have been cut by as much as 2/3's.
The Continental Hotel was purchased for $20 million and license hearings to reopen the shuttered hotel/casino will be held in early January.
