FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What causes the Munchkin to have short legs ?

The short legs are caused by a natural genetic mutation that when dominant shortens the long bone in the legs. Only Munchkins that have short legs (dominant gene) are capable of producing short leg offspring.

Why are Munchkins bred to domestic shorthairs ?

Pure and simple the Munchkin is a new breed with so much potential. In order to keep a strong genepool without inbreeding, it is necessary to look outside the Munchkin Breed. The best choice is a domestic shorthair. Typically 50% of a litter will have short legs, but over time it will likely be possible to produce entire litters of short leg Munchkins.

What about the long leg Munchkins ?

Long leg Munchkins are excellent for those who want to own a "normal" looking cat with a Munchkin personality.

What are the typical personality traits of a Munchkin ?

In most cases Munchkins are friendly, curious, outgoing, and excellent lap cats. Also many have a tendency to steal small shiny objects such as coins, keys, and jewelry. They will hide these items from an unsuspecting owner. The most pleasant attribute of the breed is that they are "kids that never grow up", maintaining a kitten like personality their entire life.

Can they jump ? How high ?

Yes, a Munchkin can jump. If you a purchasing a short-legged cat in hopes that your table and countertops will be cat free, you will most likely be disappointed. Many Munchkins are able to jump as high as a regular cat although females tend to be smaller and climb to their destination. There are some cats that will stay off countertops because they have been taught that these are forbidden areas. Very few cats naturally avoid such places due to a strong desire to climb.

Is it safe to let them go outside ?

Relatively speaking, it is not safe to let any cat run free outdoors. Dangers include disease, other animals, traffic (in many areas), and poisoning. Unfortunately even rural areas don’t offer shelter from many of these elements. There is absolutely nothing wrong with building an outdoor run for your cat or walking them on a harness, but free roaming cats are in constant danger.

Can I show my Munchkin ?

Munchkins can currently be shown at TICA (The International Cat Association) shows. Recently the Munchkin became eligible for championship status.
