Role Players Realm
(This site is under construction, expect new and improved versions soon!)
Alright, so you want to know about role-playing, right?
You want to know what an RPG, MUD, MMORPG, and all those other acronyms stand for, right?
What are the Genres for role-playing?
What do you need to know to role-play anyway?
All these questions and many more are soon to be answered. This is in no way a Complete guide to the role-playing world. Oh, not by far, there is so much, and so many new things being added everyday that in order to make the PERFECT GUIDE, you would need a lot of computers, people and knowledge…Which I have none of… *eyeshift*
So let me tell you a few things I’ve learned from my experiences in role-playing, and all it has to offer.
First of all, there are many genres to role-playing. (Different types.) If you think about it, the concept to different types of role-playing seems somewhat ridiculous, role-playing is role-playing right? Wrong. Role-playing comes in all kinds of ways to “play” or “be.” Here are a few of the genres, and a few examples of the games.
Action Role-playing games. (ARPG’s.) Role-playing games set in an environment where there is no battle-timer, or set environments for a battlefield. The entire world is a battle-field and you must use your reflexes and mind to think about what to do and where to go in that very moment. An Example- Zelda. Ocarina of Time.
“Traditional Role-playing game.” (RPG) I put this term in quotations due to the fact that “traditional” is used loosely. I know many players with different views on this style and what it should be called. In my definition, a traditional role-playing game has key story points, a strict story line to adhere to, battle timers, Turn for turn battles and automated sequences amidst all the rest of the mess. A prime example, and a favorite RPG of mine, Final Fantasy VII.
Multi User Dungeon. (MUD) A typical online text based role-playing game. Graphics are not present, it is simply text. You do not use a joystick or controller, you type whatever you want to do. In example, you have a small map in the bottom right corner of your screen, if you were to type, Northeast, or NE, you would travel in that direction, ergo a description appears on the screen, telling you what you just walked into.
One of the most popular kinds of RPGs due to the Role-playing one really must do to perform well. You really must BE the character, as opposed to playing as a graphic. You decide what you look like, do, say, smell...anything. The possibilities are endless on a MUD, a terrific example and my favorite game, Grendels Revenge.( I have included a link to the Grendels Revenge home site, e mail me for more information on the game, characters and tips. *Remember* Grendels Revenge is a game you must pay for after 30 days…Its worth it!)
Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing-Games (MMORPGs) Ah, the massive multi’s, the big M&M’s. We’ve had quite a few out in the past few years…Team up with other characters and players in a giant battle of graphics, amazing spells and curious enemies to conquer, save or protect the universe, castle…who knows anymore! Good fun, a lot of graphics usually involved, strong character bases and a whole load of fun. A few examples I can give for this type would be Phantasy Star Online, and Final Fantasy XI.
Alright, I gave you a brief rundown of the four most common role-playing games you are going to run into (In my opinion, not statistically.) So now, lets move into looking into sites to get you started on your adventures, or possibly starting a new one, for those advanced players.
Before we move into all the links and other good stuff, I would like to mention a few things.
I would like you to remember that when if I have given you a name you don’t understand, or don’t relate to, please, feel free to e-mail me at Manakola@hotmail.com.
I’m also interested on any comments, suggestions and anything else you may want to add to the site. This is only the first generation of the site, once I get a few things in order, this site will rise in scale and structure, be a bit more enjoyable to come to.
If you have anything to add, would like to see, or anything of the sort, please e mail me at Manakola@hotmail.com
Constructive criticism is encouraged, lewd comments are not.
With that said, please, feel free to check out all the links, in fact I encourage you to. Not only will they give you information on role-playing in much of its entirety, but they will also offer you a bit of trials, for you to test your role-playing abilities.
**Something to Remember**
Role-playing is an art, it is not something to be taken too lightly in most situations. Many Role-players, Especially Online role-players, consider the game very real, in effect, they ARE the character they are playing, they FEEL what the Character feels, they KNOW, SEE and DO everything the character does, remember these things when playing a MUD(Multi User Dungeon) or MMORPG. (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.)
Alright, at the bottom of the page, I've included some links for you to follow, I'll let you know when you should click a link, or if you're more interested in getting on with the games, go ahead and read on. The links include Terminology, Frequently Asked Questions, Games, and Tips.
One of the first few sites you check out if you’re unfamiliar with Role-playing, or just interested in anything of the sort, should be the terminology sites, they may be of great help if someone is slinging words around you don't understand. Another good reason to check these first, are the frequently asked questions, alot of good answers in those archives.Remember, these are all different Role-playing “communities”, all for different games, though the concept is the same. So go find a link, and see what you come up with! Once you get the hang of the terminology, you should come back so we can check out some games!
Now that you’re a bit more “hip” on the lingo, lets move on to a few more player sites, some are fan based, some are game based. I will categorize them so you know which is which.
**Cues theme music**
Story sites, and Player sites. This section of my site is dedicated to role-player’s reviews, thoughts and comments about sites. It’s a player base fan/hate club part of my site. So, Read on and have fun, keep I mind, each site will be for a different game, not many of these are based on the same game basis of any kind. I’m not even categorizing it into Genres, just Player Base Comments.
So go find another link, and get to looking, I hope you find something you enjoy.
Now that you've read a bit on some of the games, facts, lingo and players, why don't you go out and find a site that interests you. "ROLEPLAYING" In the Google search will get you plenty results, and if you'd care to narrow the search, try using some of the terminology that you've learned, and put that into your search. I recommend that you try out each type of game, that way you can see which you like best, and which you like least.
I have a site I personally recommend, Skotos.net. Its my favorite site and includes my favorite MUD, Grendels Revenge. A game where you take on the role of a monster to control, loot, plunder, raid and hunt the land of Uthgol. Choosing one from three castes, you can choose from up to 30 different monsters. Form a clan, or join another, its all up to you. If you choose to visit this site, the first 30 days are free on any of the games they have avaliable, after 30 days its $12.95 for a basic account and $30.00 to go premium. I advertise this for a larger playerbase, we would love to have more people join us in our quests and adventures as Monsters of Grendel!
Good luck finding a game, and may all your adventures be filled with doubt and worry, triumph and glory, heartache and love, victory and defeat! *Cheers*
