bibliotherapy
Welcome Readers!
Books are our heritage, our history, our teachers, our future. The new paperless society will not preclude the importance of books but rather will enhance our understanding of how we read.
We read in a linear fashion, regardless of the medium. Let to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, always linear, except in some instances in modern poetry where the spatial configuration of the words is part of the artistic play on meaning.
How will the new online reading change this linear quality? Will hyperlinks create an interactivity that will change our approach to the written word? Will we become more wholistic when we read around a subject rather than straight through it?
Whether fiction or nonfiction, our experience is bound to change. At this critical juncture in the history of the word, I hope to explore our relationship with reading, the psychology of reading.
Communicating ideas isn't always easy, and communicating emotions is almost never easy. Remember, a well-chosen book is one way to communicate. Ideas in ficiton create experience even though it is all in our heads. But don't forget, behind the words were ideas and before the ideas emotions.
If we care about reading and want to share, if we feel our ideas can even change the world then we want to let other people join in and together we will make all our lives better.
Finding the right book at the right time is the key to bibliotherapy. This web page is designed to enable you to spend less time looking for and more time reading the right book now. Eventually, there will be hyperlinks to useful sites. But for now online search "readers advisory" or "book reviews" or "reference librarian" for possibilities.
On this home page the message is simple. Reading is its own reward, helping us to process emotions and better learn how to give life more meaning.
