*THE HISTORY OF THE COLORADO AVALANCHE*
The Colorado Avalanche are not a team with big hockey traditions. the Colorado Avalanche were sold to Denver just before the '95-'96 season.

On February 11, 1972 the Quebec Nordiques officially became a professional hockey team of the WHA (World Hockey Association). They played their first game, which was on the road, on October 11. 1972. The game was played in Cleveland, Ohio. Quebec lost the game with a score of 3-0.

In May 25, 1995, the COMSAT Entertainment Group announce that they are interested in purchasing the Quebec Nordiques. on July 1, the COMSAT Entertainment Group acquired the Quebec Nordiques and on August 10, Denver’s new NHL team is officially named the Colorado Avalanche and at the same time the new team logo released. About a month later, on September 8, the Colorado Avalanche released the team’s new uniforms.

They played their first pre-season game against St. Louis Blues on September 25 winning 3 to 1. On October 6, the Colorado Avalanche played their first NHL game against the Detroit Red Wings.

STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!! Joe Sakic wins Conn Smyth as playoff MVP.

1998
Michel Goulet and Peter Stastny elected to Hockey Hall of Fame.

1998-1999
Chris Drury wins Calder Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year), with teammate Milan Hedjuk a close runner-up.

1999
The new home of the Colorado Avalanche opens in Denver - The Pepsi Center. It is a state of the art basketball and hockey arena.

October 17, 2000
Patrick Roy breaks Terry Sawchuck's record for most career wins. The Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals in the MCI Center in overtime.

February 3-4, 2001
The home of the Avalanche, the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado hosts the 2001 NHL All-Star break.

June 9, 2001
CHAMPIONS!!! The Colorado Avalanche defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in game 7 to win their second Stanley Cup. Patrick Roy won his record-breaking third Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP.
