Break Free and Astound Yourself

While I was attending a circus which came to my city a few years ago, I was looking for the concession stand and found myself quite by accident in the back where the elephants were getting ready with their trainer to be led out into the spotlight. I could not help but notice that the elephants were standing quietly while tied to a small wooden stake driven into the ground.
I asked the trainer, “Why don’t the elephants just pull the stake out of the ground with their mighty force and run away?” The trainer began to explain, “While still young, everyday a huge chain is put around the elephant’s leg and then attached to a strong post or immovable stake. At first, the young elephant tries to escape, but no matter how hard it pulls, the chain will not break and the steel stake will remain secure.” I then asked, “How can that be? As adults, these elephants have the strength and ability to pull my car down the street!” The trainer explained, “As the elephant grows and has completely given up trying to pull loose, we then remove the chain from the elephant’s leg and replace it with a little rope and a three-inch wooden stake in the ground. I can take this elephant anywhere with a small rope and wooden stake and he continues to believe he cannot move and will not be able to pull out that little wooden stake from the ground.”
When I finally made it back to my seat with my soft drink in hand, I realized I had learned a valuable lesson that night at the circus. Many of us go through life conditioned to behave like these elephants. Each day we have an imaginary chain tied to us in the form of a piece of rope and stake. We never stretch beyond it or break free from our self-imposed limitations and discover our exciting strengths and special abilities. Discover, develop, and refine them, then break free from believing that you cannot do something great. As Thomas Edison once said, “If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” Never allow what you cannot do to interfere with what you can do.
There is a wonderful world of bright new possibilities that lies within you, unused. Just be an elephant has tremendous ability to move and lift thousands of pounds, you too, are a powerhouse of ability. Once you recognize your own ability you will develop a strong belief in yourself, a belief that could move mountains.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION...Psalm 140:1-8
Lord, rescue me from evil people; protect me from cruel people who make evil plans, who always start fights. They make their tongues sharp as a snake's; their words are like snake poison. Lord guard me from the power of wicked people; protect me from cruel people who plan to trip me up. The proud hid a trap for me. They spread out a net beside the road; they set traps for me.
I said to the Lord, "You are my God." Lord, listen to my prayer for help. Lord, God my mighty savior, you protect me in battle. Lord, do not give the wicked what they want. Don't let their plans succeed, or they will become proud.
