LIPOSUCTION - BODY CONTOURING
Liposuction comes a long way. Many traditional and conventional methods were developed and applied, all based on the principle of introducing a cannula under the skin and removing fat tissue by applying negative pressure to the outer end of the tube.
Fat tissue is traditionally mobilized under the skin by destructive strokes of forward and backward thrusts, breaking down the fat network and thus making fat cells available for removal by suction.
This method causes trauma and subsequent healing by fibrosis, causing an uneven appearance with firm tissue in the treated area. It specially leaves the area unyielding and resistant to future attempts at corrective treatment.
Many methods and variations on this principle have been described and applied with some success. Fluid introduced in large volumes under the skin, the tumescent technique, is presently the most widely used technique.
The method developed by the author and practiced at the Vein Clinic in Pretoria, South Africa, utilizes the tumescent technique but uses fractionally smaller volumes of tumescent fluid, making it far safer with the same advantage of minimized bleeding in the area under treatment, both during and after the procedure.
The exciting aspect is the utilizing of a newly developed power assisted liposuction instrument with a mechanism that even further minimizes local trauma to the surrounding tissue with a further reduction in blood loss as well.
The design and application of this instrument is such that it can be applied with minimal discomfort to the patient, making it far more acceptable, especially to the patient who is interested in the operating technique. This also results in much less dependence on sedation during the procedure.
