HELP US LIBERATE THE WORLD'S SLAVES

During my 31 years of Community Service in India and Bangladesh, mainly involved in Community Development, Rural Education, Leprosy Control and the support of Widows and Orphans, I was stunned by another major problem, thought by many to no longer exist in this 21st. Century :-

SLAVERY

- SLAVERY's MAIN VICTIMS ARE WOMEN -
SPARE THEM A KIND THOUGHT

Thanks to the compassionate concerns of the famous AntiSlavery Activist, William Wilberforce, many millions of enslaved people have been set free but the struggle is far from over.

In spite of Britain outlawing this evil practice in the 1830's, followed by the U.S.A. in the 1860's, slavery continues to be practiced. Even in the most civilized of nations, including my own - Australia - where at least 1000 women, mostly smuggled in from Thailand, suffer as sexual slaves.

This website has been launched in the year 2004, declared by the U.N. to be :-

THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COMMEMORATION OF THE STRUGGLE AGAINST SLAVERY.

- to remind us that -

27 MILLION PEOPLE REMAIN IN BONDAGE.

RELIGIOUS SLAVERY - A BLATANT CRIME THAT THE "POLITICALLY CORRECT" REFUSE TO SEE

Slavery manifests itself in various forms but, in every case, through psychological or physical threats / abuse resulting in the victim's total loss of freedom, so virtually becoming the possession or property of the slave owner.

During my 31 years spent in India and Bangladesh, particularly during two periods of famine, I saw hundreds of people enslaved as "Bonded Labourers", most being forced to work in such places as biri (cigarette) / carpet factories and brick kilns with females also forced into prostitution (sexual slavery). Over 20 million such slaves exist around the world, particularly in S. Asian nations.

Children are particularly vulnerable and number about 180 million from as young as four years through their late teens. Many of these children are "Child Soldiers" who are force to kill or be killed and they are enslaved mainly in certain African nations.

"Boat People" are well known to us here in Australia They are the victims of "People Smugglers" who are modern slave traders engaged in "people trafficking". They coerse gullible people un less affluent lands with promises of good work opportunities in foreign countries. Tragically, nearly one million people each year fall victims to this illegal trafficking.

Sexual Slavery is rampant world-wide, even in my homeland of Australia where at least 1000 young women, mostly from Thailand, are forced into prostitution.

Religious Slavery in practiced mainly in Islamic countries where women have little, if any, choice in selecting a marriage partner. While many women are quite happy to accept the groom chosen by their parents, there are some for whom marriage in nothing less than legalised rape and sexual slavery. Millions of Islamic and other women are also abused through "Female Genital Mutilation" (FGM) and suffer because of the equally barbaric practice of "Honor Killing".

In some sections of Hinduism also and in other societies which practice forced marriages, women can become virtual slaves, specially when they are widows.

Sweat-Shop Slave labourers often go unnoticed for they may give the impression of being engaged in honourable employment but many have to labour for up to 80 hours a week, being paid a mere pittance and often being locked in their factories to prevent escape. I personally saw such abuse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where the Trade Union Movement seems to be powerless to liberate such slaves, many of whom make fancy garments for the lucrative trade with the U.S. and other Western nations.

In this Year - 2004 - may we dedicate ourselves to assist the U.N. and and other concerned organisations to :-
