Jon Wheeler (LegitBrass)


Jon Wheeler was formerly principal trumpet with the Continental Orchestra of Los Angeles, principal trumpet with the St. Paul JCC Orchestra (one of the founding orchestras in Minnesota), trumpet soloist with the Spurrlows & Festival Concert Brass of Orlando, soprano trumpet with the Flamingos Drum & Bugle Corps of Portland, member of Whitestone of Minneapolis, and principal trumpet of the Eden Hill Brass Quintet. Mr. Wheeler has recorded and performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, including appearances at the WBCC International Convention in Portland, Shrine Auditorium in LA, Pioneer Theatre in Reno, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, the Stichting Diensten at Belangstellenden, De Doelen in Rotterdam, and the NATO base at Grafenwoehr. He has performed in the orchestras of such stars as Wayne Watson, Ralph Carmichael, Lowell Lundstrom, Larnelle Harris, Amy Grant, Barry McQuire, Chick Corea, Kathy Lee Gifford, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Dino (Kartsonakis), and Ron Kenoly. Mr. Wheeler hails from a musically rich heritage, his mother being an accomplished pianist and second generation honor student of master composer/pianist, Franz Liszt. A native of northern Illinois, he attended Rock Valley College as lead trumpet; held principal chair at Western Illinois University Music Symposium; served as a judge for the Illinois State Instrumental Competition; and has studied with George Olisar, Principal Trumpet, Chicago Civic Orchestra and Chicago Lyric Opera; William Carroll, Principal Trumpet, Rockford Symphony Orchestra; Dave Johnson, Lead Trumpet & Jazz Soloist, 5th Army Band; Charles Geyer, Professor of Trumpet, Northwestern University & Eastman School of Music, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Principal, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Principal,Grant Park Symphony, Co-Principal, Music of the Baroque, and Co-Principal, Grand Teton Music Festival; Rick Everitt, Lead Trumpet, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Ford Playhouse and Salvation Army International Soloist; Barbara Butler, Professor of Trumpet, Northwestern University & Eastman School of Music, Co-Principal, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Co-Principal, Music of the Baroque, and Co-Principal, Grand Teton Music Festival; Ronald Hasselmann, Co-Principal, Minnesota Orchestra; and, masterclasses with recording artist Allen Vizzutti, Adolph "Bud" Herseth, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ron Modell, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Vincent Cichowitz, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Renold Schilke, Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Wheeler is a member of the International Trumpet Guild and has performed locally (Mpls/St. Paul) with the Wooddale Orchestra, Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Minnetonka Brass, Calhoun Isles Community Band, Dakota Valley Community Orchestra, praise-worship group, Manasseh and co-founded the Eden Hill Brass Quintet. He has performed with various local productions and as a free-lance soloist throughout the upper midwest, including performances at the State Capitol, Minneapolis Convention Center, Crickett Theater, Mall of America, and with Chicago-based R&R band, Inner Drive. Mr. Wheeler is a regular in the production orchestras of the metro area's largest churches, including North Heights Lutheran, Summit Assembly, Emmanual Christian Center, Mount Olivett, Wooddale, St. Luke's Cathedral, and Bloomington Assembly. He is in demand as a private instrumental instructor, teaching in both the Bloomington and Chaska School Districts, as well as instructing correspondence students out-of-state.

Formerly an artist representative for Getzen Corporation, Mr. Wheeler maintains a trumpet studio in his home in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and has an array of custom and vintage trumpets, cornets and piccolo's. Mr. Wheeler primarily plays C and D trumpets.
