DENNIS CALLAHAN
Foreman-Crude Oil Dept. 4-28-16
Denny was born May 1, 1893 in Weston Mills, N.Y. He was Night Superintendent of the Olean Refinery at the time he succeeded the late Harry English as head of the crude gathering department on January 1, 1945. And since that time he had traveled a good many miles in his daily tour of the oil fields; there's not an oil man for miles around who doesn't speak admiringly of Denny's untiring energy, will cooperation and infectious laugh. He plans to do some fishing in his leisure time, and also will try to see a few big league ball game this summer.
MARION CAVERLY
Mobile Dept. 3-17-23
Jake spent most of his time here in the PF&S Department. A bicycle racing enthusiast in his younger days, he had a special racing bike weighing only 19 pounds on which he used to ride back and forth to work from Hinsdale. Jake was born in Hinsdale September 29, 1889, is a veteran of World War I, has a wife and two sons. He has beautiful flower gardens and plans to spend a lot of time on his flowers.
JOSEPH JEFFERY
Office 5-26-26
Joe was born and raised in England, coming to this country at the age of 30. The date he landed on our shores was May 6, 1920. One son, Joe Jr. works in the Filter Department, and another lives in Elmira. His two daughters are both married, one living in Olean and the other in Allegany. Joe and his son-in-law have been doing some farming on the Five Mile, and he is all set with a new tractor, cultivator and other farm tools to really go to town this year.
DANIEL KANE
Welder 5-15-16
Dan, who was born in Olean June 5, 1898, is one of three brothers who al worked for our Company, Tom in Paulsboro and Jim in Buffalo. During the last war Dan was sent away by the Company to take a course in Training Within Industry. After completing this course he came back to the refinery and conducted courses for the refinery personnel in Job Methods. His son, Dan Jr., a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army, recently returned from service in Korea. A former Democratic City Chairman, Dan Says he may go back into politics a little now that he has more time.
EDWARD KENYON
Rigger 6-28-17
Ed was born in Olean April 23, 1891. Before coming to the refinery he was a teamster, working for such firms as Bissett and the Olean Transfer. He has three daughters and two sons. Ed Says he has had a couple of jobs offered him, but before he makes up his mind about anything like that he is going to go down to Buffalo to visit his son and do a little traveling around.
MARTIN KWIATKOWSKI
Stillman-No. 1 Dist 3-16-23
Martin was born in German-Poland October 6, 1890. As a young man he worked in coal mines in German, and then he served with the German Army for two years. At the age of 21 he came to the USA, coming directly to Olean where his mother, 5 brothers and 5 sisters were already living. He worked in the PRR shops for 9 years before he came to the refinery. He has two sons and a daughter. He says he is just going to sit and rest for a while, and then he would like to go to California to visit his brother; maybe he'll make the trip on that bike he always rides to work!
ERVE OSBORNE
Solvent recovery Man--B-K Plant 5-1-23
Erve was born in Mills, Pa., November 13, 1891. A bottle blower by trade, Erve learned the trade in Shinglehouse, and worked in various glass plants in Pennsylvania. Then he worked six years in the PRR roundhouse until the strike, and says one thing he like about that job was that annual pass! Before going to work in the B-K Plant, for quite some time on the centrifuges at No. 1 Distillation. His son Earl works in the Power House.
JOHN SASKIE
Pipefitter 1-20-16
Jack was born in Buffalo March 6, 1893 and for two years after he finished school he traveled around the country, visiting 32 states, working a while in each one and then moving on. Before he came to work here he was an inspector with Dresser in Bradford and also worked on the B&O. His son John works in the Mobile Department, and he had two daughters, one married and the other in the Waves.
STANLEY SCZUDLO
Cakerman-Grease Plant 3-21-16
Stanley, who was born in Russia February 7, 1891, came to this country in 1910. He worked for the Vacuum Oil Company in Bayonne, N. J., and in 1929 was transferred to the Olean Refinery. His main hobby is his garden and flowers. He has a wife, four children, and six grandchildren. After retirement he plans to do a lot of fishing, and also he hopes to take a trip to Oregon to visit his brother and two sisters.
HENRY WITTENBURG
Pumper-No 2 Works 11-23-15
Henry was born in Saginaw, Michigan February 2, 1890. Before he came to work here he worked for the Olean Glass Company. Practically all his time with the Company has been spent at No. 2 Works Pump House. As for his future plans, he says he is going fishing. He also owned a cottage at Cuba Lake, where he will spend a good deal of his time from now on, and then in the fall he may go down to Florida and visit his brother.
J. EDWARD STIMSON
Operator B-K Plant 10-20-13
Jay was born in Franklinville July 6, 1893 and has spent practically forty years in the Olean Refinery. He and his wife enjoy traveling, so they plan to take a few trips. He is also going to do some work around his yard, and may buy a television for his idle moments. He also hopes to spend more time with those grandchildren he is fond of.
LOUIS VAN HOUTEN
Stillman-Crude Still 3-13-16
Louie was born in Holland April 15, 1891 and came to this country at the age of three. Raising flowers is his hobby, and coming from Holland of course he raises tulips, the bulbs of which he imports from his native land. His Glads are really something to see too. Louie was telling us that he and his wife were born on the same day of the same month of the same year. Quite an unusual thing isn't it? His son Doug is a fireman at the Power House. He is married and has a married daughter, and two grandson, Doug's boys.
