DEFIBRILLATOR NOW AVAILABLE
The Sarasota Senior Softball Association now has a new "Heart Start Defibrillator" to be used for immediate first aid for players who might be experiencing cardiac problems. The defibrillator has been generously provided by Bob Palmer, who personally experienced it's life saving value during cardiac arrest.
To use a difibrillator is easy, because it has interactive voice prompts to guide it's user. A training class is recommended, and we will be arranging sessions for volunteers who wish to participate. Instructions take about an hour(1)and are free. For those wishing to be certified in CPR, there will be additional classes at a nominal cost. Times, location and CPR costs are to be determined.
We are looking for volunteers and would appreciate those who are interested to contact DAVE WULFSOHN at the field or by phone at 941-954-9089 ( between December 1 and December 7th)when he will be in town...Also, please feel free to contact any Board member regarding this training...

SARASOTA SENIOR SOFTBALL
ASSOCIATION MEETING MINUTES
October 20, 2008
2008
A Regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Sarasota Senior Softball Association was
called to order by President Bob Vandergrift on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 1:00 pm at the Elks Lodge.
Board members Bob Vandergrift, George Hawley, Joe McCarthy, Russ Jeanes,
Pat Murphy, Dave Wulfsohn, and Bill Bloom were present. John Bartell was not able to be present.
Bob introduced Dave Wulfsohn as a new Board member. Dave is replacing Pat Murphy who will be moving away in about a month.
Frank Laudano was a non-participant guest.
Pat moved and was seconded by George to approve the September minutes as presented. This was carried by a 7-0 vote.
TREASURER’S REPORT - Bob distributed copies of the July and September bank statements. The major change was a charge of $3,723.31 on the July statement for field usage from January through March. Pat moved to accept the report. This was seconded by George and was passed 7-0.
OLD BUSINESS-
A. Bob stated that Dave has been given the project of investigating the purchase of a defibrillator and the subsequent scheduling and handling of CPR and defibrillator training. Dave reported that the Philips Heart Start model seems to be the most recommended item. The cost will be approximately $1,500. Pat moved and Bill seconded the motion to purchase the unit. This was passed 7-0.
Dave now has to look into training. The Red Cross charges about $40 per person for CPR and defib training.
Bill stated that he attended a course in his sub-division. He will get Dave the name and number of the Sarasota county person who conducted the training. Perhaps the county will offer to train some of our people as a community service gesture. Pat also mentioned that Gordy Hoffmeister, a player and former deputy sheriff for many years, might have some connections within the city/county and could help our training objective. Dave stated we’d like to get 15-20 people trained. The goal is to keep the defibrillator unit in the storage shed at the field and to have enough people trained that, should there be an emergency, the odds would be nearly 100% that a CPR-trained person would be there to assist. Dave will be asking for volunteers soon.
B. There was a protest voiced on the last day of the summer Thursday league. One team
only had ten players and wanted to pick up an unranked player. The two managers could not agree as first place was at stake. They did agree to play the games under protest. After much discussion, the Board decided by a vote of 4-0 (with Board members who were involved in the games abstaining) to uphold the protest. The grounds were that the unranked player was not on the call-up list and was not rated.
Managers must be keenly aware of call-up do’s and don’ts. This gets a little more complicated with the different levels of players on different days. Managers will get a copy of all call-up players with their ratings. The call-up procedure will also soon be posted on the web site for all to see.
C. Skete Atkinson’s team has won the Thursday Summer League. Congratulations Skete and your guys!
D. George gave us a quick rundown of the sponsor status. Most have either sent in their checks or have agreed to supply uniforms. There are still a few sponsors who have been hard to reach but George will be on their case. We now have enough sponsors to support all 26 teams.
E. Joe McCarthy reported that he has arranged with his group to go to the fields early on days when there is a question about field conditions and notify managers if the fields are unusable. Helping Joe on this project are George Hawley (Mondays), Chuck Macroy (Tuesdays), Joe himself (Thursdays), and Jake Jakubowicz (Fridays). The goal is for that “scout” to notify Joe McCarthy by 7:15 am if there are not to be games that day. Joe will then contact managers by 7:30 to spread the word. Joe suggested that each manager give him an alternate name to be contacted, just in case.
F. Russ had ordered and has already received 54 dozen softballs for the upcoming season. He also stated that uniforms have been ordered and should arrive well in advance of the season’s start. Five sponsors will purchase uniforms themselves and deliver them to the league in time.
NEW BUSINESS-
A. Fall/Winter Leagues
1. The drafts were conducted on October 13th and 17th for the upcoming season. There will be a total of 26 teams with the following breakdown: 4-60’s and 5-70’s on Mondays, 6 teams on Tuesdays, 5 teams on Thursdays, and 6 teams on Fridays. Other than Mondays, all leagues will be a combination of 60’s and 70’s. Just about everyone who wants to play ball has been assigned to a team.
2. The call-up procedures get a little tricky what with all the leagues and some players even having different ratings in different leagues. Bill has volunteered to assume this responsibility from Bob. As previously mentioned, he will get this as streamlined as possible, get info out to managers, and post the call-up procedures on the web site.
3. Getting people to manage has been very difficult for the upcoming season. The Board has gone to great lengths via the ratings system to make it easier for managers to select players. Bob iterated that he didn’t have enough managers literally days before the draft.
The Board discussed some possible incentives, forms of recognition, and possibly even just assigning people who haven’t managed to do their share. All Board members were given the project of coming to the next meeting with ideas of getting people to step forward. If any readers of these minutes have any ideas, please make them known to a Board member. We need everyone’s help!
4. George distributed the schedules for the upcoming seasons. On those days when only three fields are needed, field #4 will not be used for safety reasons. Batters may have a problem looking into the sun on field #2 but it was viewed as the lesser of two evils.
5. Bob stated that a suggestion had been made that if two competing teams only had ten players each that, by agreement between managers, each would supply a catcher for the other. After some discussion, the Board felt the new rule of a team not supplying a catcher was to prevail. A team cannot provide a catcher for an opposing team.
6. Bob distributed updated copies of our Rules and Procedures. The two biggest changes are that players must be at least 58 years old as of December 31 of the year during which play ends. This used to be 60 years of age. The second change is that a player can be picked up after 7:00 am of the previous week’s games. Previously, managers had to wait until games were COMPLETED before asking someone to fill in for the following week.
B. The Sarasota Senior Softball Association will make two contributions in the name of past President Tony Del Canto. One will go to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital and the other to the Cancer Unit of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Tony was one of the pioneers in Senior softball and will be missed by all.
C. Bill has requested a notification be placed in the Herald-Tribune Community section informing readers of the existence of Senior softball in Sarasota. The H-T ad should run next week. Bill will try to get this ad to run every few months to attract new blood.
D. George noted that our season starts on Monday, November 3rd. Everyone please note that we go off Daylight savings on Sunday, November 2nd.
E. As something to think about for the next meeting, George suggested a thought that we extend the “summer” season through December, making it two half-seasons, and then include snowbirds only from January through the end of March. He said this would virtually eliminate the problem of snow birds being drafted and showing up later than expected thus causing some roster problems. It also would give a team that got off to a slow start a chance to do better in the second half. A downside would be that many snowbirds wouldn’t be playing through November and December.
F. The next Board meeting is scheduled for November 17, 2008
There being no further business before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 3:00 pm.
Bill Bloom
Secretary
