Clouds Passing Over
THE LAND WE SHARE
As I look around I see the trees disappear.
There is concrete where once laid grass.
The skies that the eagles once occupied have
been taken over by towering buyildings.
I awaken to the sweet smell of exhaust fumes
where there were once clans of families, and
I walk by many blank faces with no smiles.
This is my peoples native land,
yet our culture seems so foreign.
Our waters have become polluted
and many speak of a war yet to come.
Diseases have rushed across this
continent faster than forest fires
and their numbers are larger than
the animals that were once plentiful.
We once cut ourselves to share blood,
people now cut each other to take blood.
We once cooked over open fires,
now we eat radiation-heated food.
We once took medicine from nature,
we are now freely given chemicals for cures.
We once hunted only animals,
today it seems people are to be hunted.
All of this in the name of progress,
all of this shows how much we care and protect each other.
So let it be noted that this advanced
society that we chreish so,
is the land that we all must share.
