MISCELLANEOUS LAKE INFORMATION

Lake Sinclair is owned and operated by Georgia Power, a Southern Company. The lake has been in existence since the 1950's and is about a 90 minutes drive southeast of Atlanta. The lake is large for all types of on-water recreation consisting of over 400 miles of shoreline and over 15,000 acres of surface area.

This lake offers consistent water levels throughout the year and is boatable year-round. Lake Sinclair is drought resistant with a daily water level fluctuation of about 2 feet. This fluctuation is only a problem for boaters if they are located in extremely shallow water.

Lake Sinclair is one of the cleanest lakes in Georgia. There are no eating restrictions on the fish caught out of Lake Sinclair. Water clarity on Lake Sinclair varies depending on location. This is a mud, sand & rock bottom lake and is not as clear as rock bottom lakes found in the mountains. Try to remember clarity does not necessarily mean clean. Many lakes that have good water clarity are polluted. Some areas of Lake Sinclair will be stained after heavy rainfalls. The best way to judge the water clarity on any lake is to stick your hand in the water. Don't try to judge clarity viewing from a distance or from photos as the appearance can deceive you.
Most of the area around Lake Sinclair is considered rural. The pace is slow and easy. The lake is surrounded by 3 counties. These are Baldwin, Hancock and Putnam. The largest city closest to the lake is the small college town of Milledgeville. The population of the area is an estimated 80,000 - 100,000. The lake area is serviced by a number of very good highways and interstates. The lake area is within a 3 hour drive from either the Appalachian Mountains or the Atlantic Ocean.

Currently, there is limited commercial development on the lake. There are several marinas, some full service and some with restaurants. Don't be afraid, there is plenty to do for entertainment.

For golfers, there are several public & private golf courses in the area; for aviation lovers, there is a small airport on the lake called the Baldwin County Airport. It offers a 5,500 ft, paved runway; for shoppers, off-water retail facilities in the area include, but are not limited to, Super Wal-Mart, Kmart, Lowes, large grocery stores, small shopping centers, movie theater and numerous eating and drinking establishments. For the power shopping crowd, a short drive to Macon, Athens or the suburbs of Atlanta should satisfy almost any shopping need. Macon is about 30 minutes drive from Milledgeville; for fitness lovers, you will find that you are in close proximity to a number of heart pounding options. Play basketball, racquetball, sand volleyball or tennis at a park or gym in Milledgeville; paddle the waters of Lake Sinclair or the Oconee river just south of the lake. Hike or bike the Rock Hawk Effigy Trails located just north of the lake; for history lovers, you will have your fill just exploring the numerous historic towns in Central Georgia, including Milledgeville. Milledgeville was once the state capital. Take tours of the old homes and visit any number of high quality museums; and for hunters, Lake Sinclair is surrounded by undeveloped acreage tracts that support large numbers of wildlife. Join a hunting club or buy a small or large acreage tract for yourself. We have plenty to choose from.
