THE EVOLUTIONARY DIET
Sound Nutrition, The Basis of Good Health
The importance of proper nutrition cannot be overstated. Without proper nutrition all other efforts at achieving and maintaining good health can be only partially successful at best. Without proper nutrition there is much greater need for medical intervention, simply to assist the body in dealing with things the immune system should be capable of dealing with on its own.
Without proper nutrition every virus, every allergen, every parasite, every bacterium, and every fungus are made exponentially more pervasive, powerful, and dangerous. Not, of course, because they are strengthened in any way, but because the body's ability to fight them off is dramatically decreased.
The natural armor against all these things, the dog's own natural immune system, is dependent on proper nutrition to maintain adequate protection against invasion. With proper (species appropriate) nutrition there is a marked decrease in the need for things like antibiotics, vaccines, and pesticides.
Species Appropriate Nutrition
Any discussion of canine nutrition must start with one basic premise.
Dogs, all dogs, even Cockers, are carnivores. This is a biological imperative, and all dietary decisions must conform to this biological imperative if they are to result in proper, species appropriate, nutrition. This is not something we can change to suit our own needs and beliefs.
We must, therefore, be guided by that imperative when making decisions abut our dogs’ diet. If we are going to attempt to satisfy that imperative, we must feed them a Species Appropriate Raw Food diet. This diet, often referred to as the BARF or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food diet, or the Evolutionary Diet is essential if we expect our dogs to thrive.
Achieving species appropriate nutrition for our Cockers, or any dog for that matter, is astonishingly easy. First and perhaps foremost, all ingredients must be fed raw. No species of canine ever cooked its food. That doesn’t mean that, in most cases, they can never have table scraps or treats that have been cooked, only that the bulk of the diet must be raw.
The bulk of the diet (about 70%) should consist of RAW meaty bones. These may be fed either whole or ground. Raw organ meat and muscle meat along with a few raw green leafy vegetables makes up the bulk of remainder of the diet. There are a few other ingredients but these form the bulk of the diet.
It really is that simple. If you feed your dog nothing but the above s/he will be far better nourished than s/he would be on a diet of even the best kibble.
All our Cockers are fed this diet from weaning on. They are fed no grains and very little dairy products.
