IN 1986 KING FORMED HIS SOLO PROJECT AFTER HE LEFT MERCYFUL FATE.
A MERE 2 YEARS LATER, THE ALBUM "THEM" GAINED RESPECT FROM EVEN STEPHEN KING, AND THE ALBUM WENT GOLD. IN 1993, MERCYFUL FATE REFORMED THE BAND,UNTIL THIS DAY, KING DIAMOND IS STILL IN BOTH BANDS. THE NEW ALBUM:
KING DIAMOND is well known for his faible for metaphysics and demonic stories, as well as his drive towards atmospheric horror scenarios and changing masks. KING DIAMOND is one of the most outstanding personalities of todays metal scene. With his new album HOUSE OF GOD he tops his previous releases, musically and lyrically. His majesty presents a stunning metal album with a breath-taking story, compiled with great (and some new) musicians. The actual KING DIAMOND line-up consists still of guitarist Andy LaRocque and drummer John Luke Hebert. New members are Toronto based guitarist Glen Drover, who fans already welcomed at the ‘98 Voodoo-tour and bassist David Harbour. “That’s the best line-up I ever had” says KING really excited. “Glen is a fabulous guitarist, we could already see that on tour, but in the studio he topped himself. David is a virtuose. He plays unbelievably filigree has a great feeling for arrangements and is a great guy. No egos this time, we all are real team players”. Old guitarist Herb Simonsen and bassist Chris Estes, who can be heard on VOODOO left to familiar reasons, no personal differences. “Their wives got babies so it was soon clear, that they would not be available for touring”, states KING “but the fans want to see the same guys on tour who play on the album, so we changed the line-up already before recordings”. HOUSE OF GOD was produced by King himself with Kol Marshall, who also was second engineer on the VOODOO-production. Recording, mix and mastering of the twelve tracks (plus into) took place in the Nomad Recording Studio in Dallas, Texas. The musical direction of the album is classical, but at the same time modern and forward-looking. Songs like the emotional “The Trees Have Eyes”, the dark “Black Devil” or “The Pact” as well as the grandious title-track show KING DIAMOND fresh and vital in the new millennium. At the same time the album builds the bridge to the classics of the band’s history. “HOUSE OF GOD as a similar harsh aggression as the first KING DIAMOND albums” King explains “therefore the number of high screams went up. This is just intuitive, not calculated. The heavier the material the higher the amount of screams”. And the voice suits the stunning story better than ever.
The story:
A man gets lost in the hills and is surrounded by wolves. Suddenly an old grey wolf with shiny eyes appears, makes all other wolfs stay back, and leads the man to a small chruch on the bottom of a hill. The man enters the house of god in which everything starts to change. The wolf turns into a beautiful woman. They both fall into love on first sight and love each other on different occasions in the church. but then the man recognizes the black devil in the church and must face that the girl is kissed by the devil. He starts discussing with “Angel” (the name of the girl” and she tells him her dramatic fate: Angel was chosen by supernatural force to guard the church and made a pact with the devil. She has one year’s time to find a replacement for herself. If she’s not successful she has to die. If she is successful she can leave the frightening place but will lose her memory. The man sadly lets her go and gets almost crazy because of heartache and isolation. In his desperation he starts to destroy the church and explores a hidden path who leads to underground catacombs. Spiders and rats reign there and everythings full of human bones. The man hears a scream from the inside of a mummy. He runs back into the church and a mysterious being tells him that there exists no god or devil but everybody’s just marionettes. The man’s shocked and starts to doubt the sense of life. He desperatelly asks himself: Why am I here? Where does life begin or end? Is the universe just a grain of sand on a huge beach? The man loses his faith in life, he can’t accept what he has seen and hangs himself due to despreation and pain. Fans will definetly not lose their faith in the band because of HOUSE OF GOD! So they all will be there when KING DIAMOND enters the stages in Europe in the fall. King promises: “We will surely play five or six tracks of the new album but in direct order to keep atmosphere of the album. But there will be definetly songs of our early albums, songs we didn’t play for a long time. On the last tour we had a lot of young fans and we want to present them songs of our complete career”.
