I've been known to harbour some pretty strong opinions where the Second Amendment is concerned. By the time your done surfing this site, you will either consider me to be some sort of fanatic, (er...lunatic), or someone you would like to have coffee and head out to the range with.
I have friends in Law Enforcement who are very strong supporters of the peoples' Right to Keep and Bear Arms, heretofore reffered to as RKBA.
I also have a few friends that have told me flatout that they are not the least bit interested in the 'politics' of Gun Control, and to please stop forwarding the legislative alert messages (from GOA, NRA, etc.) that I had forwarded asking them to contact their Representatives, voicing their support, or lack thereof, when certain RKBA legislation has been introduced.
Among those individuals are several who own handguns, and may or may not hold a CCW permit, and have voiced strong support of the Second Amendment and the Bill of Rights, yet supported a 'third party' candidate in the 2000 election, which for all practical purposes, was a vote for Algore, and the gun grabbing liberal Democrats...you know who they are: Kerry, Edwards, Schumer, Feinstein, Brady, Clinton, Kennedy, and the like. Please don't make the same kind of mistake in the 2004 elections before us. Support the proven Pro-Gun candidates at the ballot box, and strive to preserve our Second Amendment rights.
Pictured above is my primary sidearm. It accompanies me wherever I may pack it around legally.;) Unfortunately, for those of us who wish to exercise our right to Keep and Bear Arms, that right has been severely infringed, even though the Constitution of the United States of America explicitly states that it "...shall not be infringed."
For example, here in the state of Iowa, one may very well obtain a CCW permit (a permit to carry on your person, a concealed dangerous weapon),from the Sheriff of the county you reside in. But Iowa is presently a 'discretionary issue' state. Which, simply put, means this: Let's say you went to High School with the man who is presently your Sheriff. In school, you and he did not get along very well. Now, years later, being a good, law abiding citizen, with no criminal record or documented mental problems of any kind, you apply for a CCW permit and pass the required federal background check without a hitch, but the Sheriff remembers you from your High School days, and decides that since he has the final say in the matter, what better way to 'get back at you', than to deny your request for a weapons permit. Now, granted, this could be cited as an unlikely scenario, because we all want to believe that our Law Enforcement Officials are good, honest, and upstanding citizens themselves, but it is one that you could very well experience non-the-less.
Gun Owners Unite!!!
The National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America are the most predominant lobby oganizations on behalf of the First and Second Amendments in Washington. Yet with over 80,000,000 gun owners in the U.S., only a fraction, about 3 or 4 million, have joined these organizations to add weight to their arguments before Congress. But, nearly all of them whine when yet another of their rights are struck down by the anti-gun activists both in Congress, and the Judiciary. Sheeple...you gotta get off your cans, and join these organizations and become part of the solution, and less a part of the problem. Sure, you may argue that you don't like the way one does this or that, but when was the last time you flew to Washington to defend my rights on the floor of Congress? You might even whine about the $35 bucks a year for dues each one asks of you, but hell...I spend more than that on cigarettes each week. You probably have a different vice that costs you more than $35 a year. Have 5 less pizzas a year, or 1 less 20oz. soda per week, and you've nearly covered your membership in both of these organizations. Sounds like a pretty pathetic argument when put forth in those terms, doesn't it?
Both of these organizations have fantastic websites that offer everything you need to quickly, and coveniently contact your representatives and express your thoughts on legislation in Congress. Both do all the leg work for you, and offer e-mail alerts, so all you you have to do is click here, click there, and send a message to your Congressmen, or Senators. GOA even has prewritten letters, and a "remember me" option, so you only have to type your contact information once! Even a terminal 'couch potato' can be an effective activist with those kind of tools! You don't even have to be a member to contact your reps through their sites, but becoming a member gives them teeth in Washington. Strength in Numbers. Show your Representatives and the anti-gun lobby that we have the resolve it takes to defend the Constitution of the United States.
I am a Life Member of the NRA, and an annual member of GOA, The Second Amendment Foundation, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO). I hope you will be, too.
At this time, 36 states have passed legislation which prohibits this sort of discrimination in the issuance of CCW permits. Our neighbors, Minnesota and South Dakota being two of them. Missouri is now 'Shall Issue'. Ohio's Governor Taft just signed the new legislation into law. Nebraska has gotten legislation passed, but the citizens of Iowa still rely upon the discretion of county sheriffs' to issue them a Concealed Carry permit.
That is where help is desperately needed!!
