Korando Poverty Eradication Organisation
KORANDO POVERTY ERADICATION ORGANISATION (KPEO)
KPEO is a faith born mission that grew in the heart of a nurse named Maryanne Cooper who felt God was calling her to Africa. She corresponded with Malaki Ogalo of Korando in Kisumu Kenya in 2001. Maryanne and Malaki held the needs of the poverty stricken people of Korando close to their hearts. In January 2005 Maryanne went to Kenya and lived with the Luo people of Korando. Adopting their lifestyle for 45 days, eating what they ate, living life as they did, while gaining insight into the needs. Moving through the community she saw images of death, hunger, disease and poverty. She embraced the people and they her. Maryanne often walked up to 20klms a day, providing spiritual support, nursing care and meeting the practical needs of the sick, aged, orphans, injured and widows. Maryanne collaborated with community members, together they identified issues affecting them. She facilitated 17 meetings while in Korando, encouraging the people to continue to work together seeking solutions to overcome the issues. An executive board was formed Maryanne is the director. On the last day of her stay in Kenya Maryanne went to Nairobi to apply for registration of the newly formed Non Government Organization named 'Korando Poverty Eradication Organisation'(KPEO). Since her return home to Bundaberg Queensland Australia in mid February 2005, the group in Korando have been making progress, meeting objectives and corresponding with Maryanne via email. In Bundaberg Maryanne has continued the mission by providing encouragement and directives to the group in Korando gathering support. She has formed a sister group named Aussies Serving Korando (ASK) in Bundaberg. ASK and KPEO are working in conjunction to meet the aims and objectives of Korando.
Through support, supervision, determination and collaboration these loving Luo people have identified ways of beginning the process of eradicating poverty among the people of their community.

TO SERVE KORANDO
1. KPEO is keeping their focus on the Korando B sub location; a geographical area of 7.7 square kilometres with a population of 5500. The narrow focus facilitates a concentrated and more achievable effort in the provision of aid.
2. Korando B will be effectively empowered to eradicate poverty through education, provision of finance, land, equipment and commodities such as electricity, a bore hole for fresh running water. they will develop infrastructure and sustainable income generating schemes, including a health clinic, school and orphanage to reduce the burden on the economy of this tiny community.
3. One example of an income-generating scheme is: “Boda Boda” a bicycle taxi, which will cost Aus $90 and will help a family immediately as they can commence an income generating taxi service.
4. KPEO has developed guidelines for sponsorship of individuals and orphans for boarding school fees. to sponsor an individual’s secondary education for a year is approximately Aus $400. This includes their accommodation, food and education for a year. The whole community benefits through this type of assistance, as it removes the burden from the community, provides social, nutritional and educational needs of the individual and when the individual completes their education program they return to Korando B as a productive, skilled and educated member of the community.
5. KPEO has identified the need to address issues associated with Christian development and evangelism, through provision of equipment such as bibles, musical instruments and bicycles to enable church leaders to access those needing spiritual and practical support, strengthening community values and ties.
6. Land and infrastructure: With help it is possible that in the not too distant future, Korando B will have a locally operated health clinic, orphanage, and school/polytechnic, along with agricultural and other income generating businesses. To achieve this KPEO must purchase plots of land. In February 2005 KPEO identified 3 plots of land and completed formal land title searches. The landowners are Korando residents and KPEO members are ready to negotiate a sale. One plot large enough to accommodate a health centre is approx Aus $1500. Once the land is purchased the locals are quite capable of firing up all the required mud bricks to help us to help them to get underway with meeting their goals.
