KAY STEWART

"You can take the girl out of the country, but she always comes back."

I've lived most of my life in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As a child, I played in the trees, hunted mushrooms, adopted lost ducks and did most of the things country kids do, well, except make mud pies (yuck!). Activities of rural areas were commonplace to me, and, at the time, I didn't realize how special they were. I wondered what else was out there and craved a fast paced life. While in college, I explored much of the East Coast and found I enjoyed city life a lot. After graduating, I took a job in a town close to Atlanta and a short drive from the Appalachian Trial. I had the best of both worlds! But I noticed that I felt more at home when I was on the Trail, surrounded by nature.
I eventually moved home to the Valley again because of a lengthy illness. I spend a lot of time convalescing in the backyard, in the woods or next to a stream. I took slow walks and noticed details that I had overlooked before. I gained new appreciation of the beauty of the scenes around me. I started photographing what I saw. I discovered there is no place more beautiful than the country.

BOB MAY

"You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the love of the country out of the boy."

Born and raised in Bergton, Virginia, a rural community in Rockingham County, I grew up working on the familiy farm. After college, I moved to Washington, DC, where I worked for a defense contractor. Staring at computer screens in super-secure but remarkably dull basement offices became my average workday. In an abrupt change of life, I became a missionary and was immediately sent overseas to bridge the digital divide. I continue to work internationally, sharing in the lives of wonderful, colorful people in wonderful, colorful places. There's nothing more beautiful than the country--any country.
