THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL HISTORY
On Sept. 12, 1979, Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox collected his 3,000th hit against Jim Beattie during a 9-2 win over the rival New York Yankees. The milestone hit came at Fenway Park, where Yaz debuted as a rookie in 1961. The future Hall of Famer became the first American League player to reach both 3,000 hits and 400 home runs.
