for battered women in healthcare settings demands that ALL
nursing administrators develop protocols to identify and
intervene with survivors of domestic violence. Institutional
support and planning are essential in developing effective
policies and protocols.
John, addresses key issues for nurse administrators to
consider in the requirement of professional education
to respond to CHILD and ELDER ABUSE and DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
FORENSIC NURSING is an emerging field within
the nursing profession. The newest specialty
recognized by the America Association of Nurses.
Forensic nurses are involved with examinations of
living patients in all Clinical area whether
routine or emergency care. In cases of sexual assault,
S.A.N.E (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners),conduct
examinations, photograph and collect evidence from
living people who have been sexually assaulted.
Forensic Nurses may also be involved in death investigation processes.
LESS THAN 10% of Nurses have the training required to identify injury.
Child and Elder Abuse as well as signs of Domestic Violence are of unnoticed or ignored due to lack of training.
Dr. McPhail has authored the program "Living Forensic" to train nurses to identify injury, photograph injury, collect evidence, maintain the chain of custody, produce documentation that will withstand legal scrutiny and to effectively testify in court. He has effectively transformed the death investigation skills to "Living Forensics."
Violence is a public health issue because it puts more people in the hospital than most major diseases, "An Australian study supports U.S. findings that domestic violence is a universal public health problem and the need for training of emergency department staff to handle domestic violence case is committed to improving the quality of emergency care through continuing education, research, and public
education.
