#####################################################################
JORDAN ACRES is a small kennel on 2 acres, located in Buckfield, Maine.
I have 22 years experience in breeding, 8 of which are with the Boxer, previously I had Doberman Pinschers.
I pay close attention to Dominant and Recessive gene traits. Striving to produce HEART/HIP healthy pups with the best possible temperaments and conformation. I am adhering more closely to a Dutch standard as opposed to the American standard, I just prefer the look.
Boxers come with many health issues connected to their genetic code. Cancer, Cardiomyopathy, Aortic Stenosis, and Hystiocytic Ulcerative Colitis being some of the deadliest of their genetically prevalent disorders. They also suffer from other health problems, HD or Hip Dyplasia (can be genetic or brought on by injury to the hip joint, obesity, poor diet or a combination of these factors) and Thyroid problems.
More recently, Stenotic Nares (constricted nostrils) has been a problem getting more attention these days. It is a condition where the cartilages that shape the nostrils are too soft, allowing the ends of the nostrils to pinch shut when the dog breathes. It makes breathing difficult and is usually accompanied by snorting and mouth breathing. This is a condition exclusive to Brachycephalic breeds, such as Boxers, Pugs, Shih Tzu's, etc. due to the softening of the cartilage by breeding for "mush-faced" dogs. This condition is congenital in the sense that it happens during the gestation, it is genetic in the sense that it is breed specific, albeit no known, consistent literature has been written with a 100% guarantee that it is hereditary and can be passed on through breeding. Procedures can be performed to remove a small portion an elongated palate and/or the ends of the nostrils to correct the problem.
Allergies are another issue where the Boxer is concerned. Typically, allergies start to appear at about 5 months of age. Anyone who has a pet that suffers from allergies knows the signs and symptoms well. Swelling of the face and ears, hives (itchy bumps), licking of the feet, excessive scratching, all are signs of an allergic reaction which can be quite severe, including swelling of the tongue which can cause airway restriction; they can be from a number of causes; some of them being pet food, table scraps, pollen, pet shampoo, peanut butter, flea bites, and your laundry detergent. Always take your dog to the vet for diagnosis and medical care, never try to assess and diagnose something on your own. (Also, never feed your dog potatoes, onions or chocolate... they are toxic to them)
For more info on some other Boxer related health issues, please click on the link at the bottom of the page entitled "CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION REPORTS", this month they are discussing Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) which is the equivelant to human Lou Gehrig's or Multiple Sclerosis. HOD is something else that has been brought to my attention as of late, and I will write more about it as I gain the knowledge; however, at this time I do know that Boxer pups can NOT have more than 26% protein in their diet and should not be fed meats (AKA table scraps) in addition to their dry food as you can add proteins without realizing it. HOD is a condition that affects growth plates in the joints causing severe pain. Please click on the link I have provided below for more information.
It is fair to say that Boxers have more than their share of health concerns, and while it may be impossible to completely remove them from the breed altogether, I do what I can, as a Breeder, to try and lessen the affects through careful breeding. That is not to say that I wouldn't like to see significant improvement in my breeding program over the next 20 years...(My main priority in my breeding program is to focus on healthy hearts). It has taken about 55 years for Boxers to get this way, likewise, it will take a lot of time and a lot of conscientious Breeders to bring them back to prime. I truly believe that American Show Breeders (and Backyard Breeders)have inbred consistently enough to certain top show dogs, that they inadvertantly caused a lot of the health problems we now see; the only way to start to breed out these problems is to go back to the source of the Boxer and start using more European dogs to enhance our breeding programs. We also need to start using the more strict breeding regulations and tests that the European breeders use to QUALIFY a dog BEFORE it is allowed to breed; if we do this, I am hopeful that our Grandchilden's Boxer will be a healthier breed.
I am no longer a member of the Great Falls Dog Obedience Club due to lack of time these days; but, I continue my training at home and I will always believe that socializing and training your Boxer puppy is one of the most important things that you can do for your dog (and yourself :) Obedience training also helps you to establish yourself as the "Alpha" figure. I take my dogs with me as many places as I can. During the first 12 weeks of life is the most important time for your new pup; you need to introduce your puppy to 100 new people, places and things in the first 12 weeks. This may sound impossible, but it is easier than you think.
"Pet" Quality puppies are sold with a Spay/Neuter contract
with NO acceptions and I do follow through with legal action if the contract is broken.
"Schutzhund" Quality puppies are sold with a contractual requirement to show to "finish" and the dog must attain the age of 18 months before being allowed to breed.
*** A Non-Refundable Deposit is required on ALL pups ***
I do not BREED or DESTROY white Boxers. IF a litter is produced with a white puppy, it will be hearing tested and vet-checked and given all appropriate shots, the same as a colored puppy, however, the pup will be sold as "Pet Quality" ONLY and with a spay/neuter contract. I typically do NOT have white pups in my litters. I breed "classics" to "classics", or "classics" to "flashy". Breeding two "flashy" dogs WILL produce white pups. I have had only one white puppy born out of the 15 litters I have produced and/or Sired over the past 8 years.
All Jordan European Boxers are raised in the home with my family and will be wormed & up-to-date on all shots. Pet quality pups, or pups sold as "pets" have a 1 year health guarantee; the reason for this is I guarantee Heart issues, and you will know if the pup has a heart issue within 6 months, it won't take 2 years to find that out. All pups sold as potential Schutzhund or future breeders, have a 2 year health guarantee for hips & heart; the reason for this is it will take 2 years for the hips to stabilize for a correct Penn Hip score.
I highly recommend crate training new pups. All pups will be started on their crate training for at least 3 weeks before leaving to go to their new home. They will be taught their name (the new owner gives name). They will also be started on the basic commands "come" and "sit", (In German as well as English )as well as their house training.
Jordan European Boxers come with AKC registration papers. We have pups that are suitable for the show ring and Schutzhund work, as well as family companions. All Jordan European Boxers remain on the premises until 8 weeks of age. We can hold pups after the 8 weeks for an additional charge at a rate of $25 per week.
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO CLICK ON LINK BELOW FOR THE PUPPY SELECTION AND TEMPERAMENT **** THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION THAT YOU MAY MISS.
Shipping is available (weather permitting if the temperature is over 70'F on either end of the flight, the airline will postpone shipping). Shipping charges are additional to the cost of the pup and may vary depending on the airline and/or region.
