GENEALOGY of the DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WALKER of WIGTON, SCOTLAND

Based on the book of the same name written by Emma Siggins White, published in 1902. John Walker was the immigrant who left Wigton, Scotland, travelled to Northern Ireland, and then to America. The complete set of 5,879 individuals are included. The surname listing is here, and an index of all the people involved here. This GEDCOM
file is based on her book as it was written, even though we know there were some mistakes in it.

This data base comes from the GEDCOM file that was put together by Jerry Penley of Kingsport, TN.

Don Erickson of Colorado Springs, CO used Jerry's GEDCOM file to produce this set of html files for your
perusal.

Early history of the Walkers from Wigton is based on the book by Emma White. Aunt Emma did not leave the sources of some of her materials and various errors have been found.

(Walker)

(1.) John Walker, of Wigton , the first of the name that is known to us, lived and died as we suppose in Wigton. He married Jane McKnight; of their children the names of only two are known to us: John and Alexander

John Walker (2), born in Wigton, Scotland, married Katherine Rutherford January 07,1702,in Scotland. From Scotland he moved his family and settled near the town of Newry, Ireland. He and family with three of his brother Alexander's children left Strangford bay in May 1726 (another record says 28 or 30 on board a vessel commanded by Richard Walker, and landed in Maryland August 02. He transported his family and settled in Chester Co., Pa., where he died in September, 1734; his wife died in 1738; both buried at Nottinghan Meeting House in Chester Co., Pa.

"Most of the family left Pa. And settled in Rockbridge and adjointing counties in Virginia. John Walker contemplated such a move, and had been to Virginia a short time previous to his death and selected a farm upon which he erected a small building." --Aunt Emma White "Descendants of John Walker (page 3)

This is somewhat misleading as it implies that John 11 settled in Rockbridge. There is no evidence for that, and in deed, the area now known as Rockbridge did not begin to receive settlers until after John 11's death in 1734.

It is more likely that if John 11 actually visited the Virginia area, his homestead was futher north, perhaps north of Staunton.
