PU'U KUKUI IS A HIKE OF A LIFETIME AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE THATS EXACTLY HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE YOU TO GET PERMISSION. PERMISSION CONSISTS OF SUBMITING AN APPLICATION AND THEN A DRAWING IS HELD ONCE A YEAR TO ALLOW UP TO 12 HIKERS ON THE TRAIL TO PICK WEEDS .YOUR COST IS $500 IF SELECTED WHICH INCLUDES AIR TRANSPORTATION TO WITHIN 3 MILES OF THE PEAK. THATS NOT A HIKE!!, WHEN DOES A HIKE UP A 5788 FT MT. INCLUDED A CHOPPER RIDE?.
The funny thing about this hike is that it is closed to the public since 1988 under the guise of "Water Shed Managment" and Indangered Plant Species" but according to public documents the federal government on Dec 18 2000 said that it should not stay closed due critical plant species protection because the area had recovered sufficiently enough to re-open as long as the government of hawaii had money enough to manage the area.But since they (Maui County) does not have the funds to do this it will stay on the protection list.
This is kind of funny when you really think about it. Because they sell helocopter rides to the top for $200 per person which goes on all year round and lets not forget the money they make off the hikers.
And to all the Local Hawaians who are hiding behind the government on this one i say "Its funny how you want the U.S. Governments laws when it suits you and how you want your own "Kingdom of Hawaii" when it doesn't.
