Scripture Lesson Text:
Matthew 15:21-28 (King James Version)
21Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
22And, behold , a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying , Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil .
23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying , Send heraway ; for she crieth after us.
24But he answered and said , I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25Then came she and worshipped him, saying , Lord, help me.
26But he answered and said , It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
27And she said , Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
28
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even asthou wilt . And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
INTRODUCTION
There are many churches in which the pastor receives unusually large amounts of criticism or opposition. It is a fact that our culture promotes a have-it-your-way life that has undermined the concept of pastoral authority. Young people often lack respect for all authority, including that in the spiritual realm of life. Those pastors experience much heartache on their field of service but are often respected much more highly when given the opportunity to minister somewhere else.
This fact of life was true of Jesus' ministry too. His hometown people could not get past the idea that He was the ostensible son of a carpenter. But when Jesus made a journey into a neighboring country, He was eagerly sought out by someone who knew the strength and reality of His ministry.

CONCLUDING THE LESSON
The fact that Jesus ventured outside His nation when He went to Phoenicia may not sound very significant, but it does picture Him briefly as a missionary to a foriegn land within the massive Roman Empire. When He said that His disciples would do greater things than He did, perhaps He had in mind the missionary exploits of someone like the Apostle Paul, who pioneered the gospel across the northern Mediterranean.
Remind your class of the great change that occurred. Jesus a Jew, brought salvation and started His church. It was carried on by Jews but then shifted primarily to Gentiles, and that is where it remains today. What He told His disciples applies to us in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20).
